About the Position:

This position reports to the Director of Emergency Management primarily providing support for emergency management and fire safety. Supports the Director of Emergency Management in all capacities including planning, training, exercises, responding to incidents, and emergency communication. Manages the fire safety program for the University, which includes fire safety policies, planning, inspections, drills, and corrective action tracking. This position is expected to assist Emergency Operations Center activities and command post activations, which will include off-hours response.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages SMU's Fire Safety Program. This includes developing policies and procedures to mitigate the threat of fire on-campus; oversee fire safety programs; delivering appropriate training for campus constituents and departments; liaising with local fire code officials (coordination of fire safety inspections, requesting fire-watch, event planning, etc.); planning and conducting evacuation drills.
  • Manage the University's Building Emergency Coordination Program (BECP). This includes development and update of building specific Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAPs); working with building staff to recruit BECP Team members; delivering training to BECP Team and building end-users; coordinating supplies for BECP Team members.
  • Provides support for SMU's Emergency Management (Resilience and Crisis Management). This includes assisting with developing Event Action Plans; planning, coordinating, and delivering of campus exercises; serve as an administrator for the University's incident management software and mass communication system; liaising with local, state, and federal entities; and supporting the COOP program.
  • Provides support for emergency operations as needed during major campus events, athletic events, commencement, campus incidents/emergencies, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required for this position, preferably in Emergency Management or Fire and Life Safety.

A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in emergency management is required. Candidate with basic inspector through Texas Commission on Fire Protection experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate is required to have strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. A strong customer service orientation with the ability to work and effectively communicate with a wide range of people at varying levels of skill and authority is required.

Problem solving, time management, and organizational planning skills are required. Candidate with the ability to multi-task, manage and prioritize day-to-day tasks combined with project management is required.

Candidate should have strong understanding of compliance and be a critical thinker.

Microsoft office skills including excel, word, PPT for presentations and training is required.
