SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the safe handling and storage of hazardous substances on campus. The Coordinator understands and supports the mission and vision of EH&S and assists with identifying and mitigating physical, chemical, and biological hazards in the workplace to protect workers from job-related injuries and illnesses. The incumbent assists with improving trainings and communications to promote a safe and healthy work environment, implements and upholds best practices, identifies deficiencies, and recommends corrective actions to maintain compliance with applicable regulations and standards. The incumbent assists the University in ensuring compliance with various federal, state and local regulatory and non-regulatory requirements pertaining to public safety, education, and the environment, including but not limited to: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Code of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR), Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Department of Transportation (DOT). The incumbent is responsible for the management and oversight of the campus chemical inventory, and Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS) ensuring that the campus remains in compliance with fire, building and safety codes.

EXAMPLE OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Manage and is responsible for the CEMS inventory database
• Supports and assists the campus to maintain compliance with applicable fire, building, and safety codes
• Oversees and manages waste disposal (biological, hazardous, and chemical)
• Approves and tracks chemical and gas requisitions in BuyWays
• Provides various safety-related training and guidance through CITI Program
• Conducts a wide range of safety inspections and laboratory/studio audits and reports concerns
• Conducts annual certification of chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets
• Conducts annual testing of emergency eye wash and safety showers
• Responsible for coordinating and implementing laboratory inspections
• Assists in the development of safety procedures for the campus for a wide variety of health and safety services
• Assists with the implementation of safety policies and procedures, including training of campus personnel, identifies deficits/issues, then develops and implements corrective action
• Ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and University safety and hazardous material regulations
• Responds to campus hazardous materials emergencies and other reports of unsafe conditions
• Serves as a member of the University Chemical Committee
• Assists principal investigators in the development of standard operating procedures and/or best practices to be used with routine processes and experiments in the laboratory/studio, including but not limited to: hazards associated with chemicals used in labs based on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other references sources, proper laboratory engineering controls, administrative procedures, and personal protective equipment
• Manages compliance requirements related to hazardous waste management, OSHA Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene Plan, and other safety equipment such as but not limited to fire extinguishers, emergency eye wash and safety showers, and fume hoods
• Provides safety and regulatory information and assistance to management, faculty, staff, and students on laboratory safety procedures related to hazardous materials, safe use, and practices
• Works with or coordinates with faculty PIs, staff, facilities department, students, and outside agencies related to EH&S, emergency management, and continuity management
• Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned and/or the job description changed periodically to reflect changing organization needs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in science, Environmental Health and Safety, Emergency Management or a related field

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum (over one year) experience in emergency management and/or continuity management

OTHER:

Must have a valid Driver's License and be willing to drive between campus locations and to off-campus assignments

Must be able to report to campus, when required

Must have RCRA/DOT/IATA training

40-hour HAZWOPER Training certified

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Understanding of regulatory standards and best practices from, but not limited to: NFPA, NIOSH, OSHA, MassDEP, EPA, FEMA, CDC
• Understanding of ANSI Standard Z136.3 - 2005
• Understanding of Code of Mass Regulation (CMR) 310 (Haz-Waste Rules), OSHA 29 CFR1910.1200 and 1910.1450
• Ability to provide a high standard of customer service to all faculty, staff, and students at the University
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management
• Motivated self-starter requiring minimum supervision
• Ability to work in all areas of the University, including laboratory environments
• Ability to work in environments that involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following detailed safety precautions and may include the use of protective gear
• Ability to lift up to fifty pounds
• Ability to handle working with hazardous chemicals and biological materials
• Computer skills to update online training and website as needed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in science, environmental health and safety, or related field
• Experience in higher education and research laboratory use
• CSP: Certified Safety Specialist Professional
• CHMM: Certified Hazardous Materials Manager
• Knowledge in lab safety audits
• Working knowledge in OSHA
