WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO

  • General hospital maintenance including, but not limited to cleaning, laundry, stocking, and inventory.
  • Answering and facilitating incoming calls according to hospital policies.
  • Learn to use basic medical terminology, abbreviations, and key medical terms.
  • Assist veterinarians & technicians in patient care of various species (canine, feline, exotics) including, but not limited to restraint and supporting the team in caring for hospitalized patients (such as preparing food, and helping with walks)..
  • Properly read and complete all treatment sheet orders pertinent to the role (for ex: walking and feeding stable patients) and documenting relevant patient information (vomiting, regurgitation, urine and fecal voids).
  • Be trained to perform Basic Life Support aspects of CPR based on RECOVER initiative guidelines, including chest compressions and record keeping.
  • Setting up, assisting in operating, and cleaning commonly used hospital equipment such as monitoring equipment, oxygen cages, sample analyzers, and patient heating devices.
  • Set up and assist in common patient and treatment procedures, maintaining an "always ready" state.
  • Clean and prepare surgical instrument packs, set up equipment and supplies for surgical procedures, and disinfect surgery suites according to hospital standards.
  • Assist in basic laboratory procedures, including, but not limited to: handling blood and urine samples, using the centrifuge, staining blood films and cytology slides, and using all in-house lab analyzers.
  • Participate in nursing care team rounds upon shift change.
  • Be a vital member of the veterinary team working with veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and veterinarians to help people and their pets when they need it most.
  • Be supported financially and through mentoring to pursue veterinary technician credentials, if desired.
