Summary:

Under the direction of the Engineering Project Manager, the Embedded Systems Engineer will focus on New Product Development (NPD) projects. The Embedded Systems Engineer will work cross-functionally to execute and deliver through the design, development, and application of proprietary electronic controls for electromagnetic clutch and brake technologies spread across a variety of markets such as industrial automation, material handling, and mobile off-highway vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Design and review schematics and PCB layouts.
  • Research applicable industry standards, analysis of systems, create preliminary and detailed engineering designs to comply with required agency standards and certifications as CE, UL, CSA.
  • Create and review technical specifications documentation and interact with all stakeholders to gather design critical information.
  • Conduct detailed hardware and firmware validation testing to assure quality product; perform root cause analysis (RCA, FMEA) on defective / suspect hardware and drive corrective and preventive action with appropriate Quality Assurance group(s).
  • Plan, organize, and perform detailed electrical and/or control system design and testing activities.
  • Ensure manufacturing, installation and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Design, write, and debug firmware programs and control systems with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, maintainable, and reusable.
  • Assume responsibility and ownership of multiple controls projects concurrently from specifications to a finished production product while meeting commercial launch schedule and project budget.
  • Provide project cost and time estimates.
  • Identify technical risks/issues and develop contingency plans to mitigate impact on project schedule or scope throughout product development lifecycle (project management).

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies
  • Work alongside a dedicated hardware engineer to design and test Analog & Digital Circuits, and microcontroller-based circuits.
  • Schematic and PC Board layout review.
  • Communication Protocols: Experience with RS-485, Modbus, CAN Bus, Ethernet/IP, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi.
  • Firmware: Proficient in C on ARM and Microchip mcu platforms Knowledgeable in the use of PWM, DMA, ADC, DAC, I2C, SPI and advanced timer peripherals.
  • Preferred Tools: MS VSCode, Makefile, GCC, GDB, OpenOCD, MS Outlook, MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.), Altium, STM32Cube, MPLab , Solidworks Electrical.
  • Experience leading controls and software engineering projects.
  • Experience in specifying, designing, programming and maintaining embedded microprocessor-based control systems, ability to program and modify new and existing applications.
  • Competent to write, debug, flash, and interface microprocessor code in C.
  • Ability to design robust safety circuits and specify components of varying industry requirements, agency standards and certification requirements.
  • Working knowledge of CAN, Modbus, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi/Wireless, and other industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with structured source code management & versioning systems and build environments.
  • Ability to structure product design, bills of material and configurations for use in a formal manufacturing environment. Engineering output must be easy to understand and employ by technical services & publishing groups, production, stakeholders and customers (sales, contractors, systems integrators, end users, etc.).
  • Able to develop and maintain strong working relationship with all internal groups.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively discuss both commercial and technical aspects of a project to all stakeholders.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications or other related technical field.
  • 5+ years in development and design of embedded devices.
  • 2+ years of design project leadership.
