Job Description

Job Title: Environmental Health & Safety Specialist

Department: Production

Reports to: Plant Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary: Manage the environmental, health, and safety issues, in addition to planning security, emergency services and office safety research and development. Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations and standards along with developing, maintaining and implementing the Environmental Health & Safety quality program to prevent or correct unsafe environmental working conditions by performing the following duties.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the development of the EH&S program for the Berea facility by developing procedures, processes and resources for fulfilling these needs.

Lends specialized expertise in the areas of the Environmental Health & Safety, Security, Emergency Services, Office Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Risk Management.

Coordinates proper handling and disposal of waste materials both non-hazardous and hazardous.

Conduct Safety/Injury/Accident surveys, investigations, and interviews.

Writes company EH&S policies and procedures.

Benchmark EH&S program practices and costs. Identifies opportunities to improve service and cost effectiveness.

Coordinates and implements the Injury Illness and Prevention Program including specialized training in Forklift safety, Personal Protective Equipment, Blood borne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, Prop 65 and Ergonomics for office personnel.

For the EH&S Department, responsible for the purchase of supplies and services.

Develops a qualified vendor pool to satisfy program needs and locates vendors for special purchases. Schedules vendor activities.

Records, reviews, complies, organizes, and stores information generated by the EH&S program.

Assists with employee training.

Must be familiar with locating and using CCR's, OSHA, NFPA, and local and municipal fire codes. Familiar with MSDS and SB198. Must be able to accurately interpret regulatory requirements and assist in compliance measures.

Ensures compliance with government, state, and local regulations; including corporate/business policies.

Examines plans and specifications for new machinery or equipment to determine if all safety precautions have been included.

Determines amount of weight that can be safely placed on the plant floor.

Tours plant to inspect fire and safety equipment, machinery, and facilities to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Determines requirements for safety clothing and devices, and designs, builds, and installs, or directs installation of safety devices on machinery.

Conducts or coordinates safety and first aid training to educate workers about safety policies, laws, and practices.

Investigates industrial accidents to minimize recurrence and prepares accident reports.

Conducts air quality test for presence of harmful gases and vapors.

Maintain a clean and efficient production floor

During heavy workload periods, provide assistance in plant tasks

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Will provide support for the Berea facility.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) or 5 years related experience and/or training: or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong demonstrated administrative and support skills required. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access required.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A certificate, license or registration in the area of Environmental Health & Safety is preferred but not required.
