Job Summary:

Provides counseling services and coordinates student registration procedures in the facility's Education Department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Counsel's inmates on appropriate academic/vocational programs based upon educational and occupational interests and experience
  • Ensures that all Education Bureau and outside agency educational documentation involving registrations processed according to guidelines
  • Serves as a liaison between instructors and the facility Classification Department for inmate good time recommendation
  • Serves on the Institutional Initial and Reclassification committees
  • Coordinates all file transfers
  • Coordinates selected program services with the direction of the Education Director
  • Assists the Education Director in the overall management of the Education Program
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Knowledge of basic counseling techniques and the ability to listen and communicate effectively with a wide variety of personality types and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with both staff and inmates.
  • Knowledge of Adult Basic Education curriculum and teaching methodology.
  • Ability to maintain records including testing, daily inmate work, attendance and general record keeping.
  • Ability to work individually with inmates students having learning or behavioral problems.
  • Ability to discuss progress or need for improvement with inmate students.
  • Ability to make suggestions for curriculum improvement.
  • Ability to organize orientation and registration of student.
  • Ability to counsel students of widely varying levels of interest and achievement.
  • Ability to review educational files for special learning indicators and refer to the Special Education Teacher.
