Position Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University. Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Center for Educational Partnerships, Outreach and Success; Communications Services; Counseling and Psychological Services; Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; Cultural and Identity Centers; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity

The Division facilitates the academic and career success, personal growth and well-being of all students, and works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures, while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals. We aim to foster an affirming campus culture based on the core values of excellence, equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion through:

● Recruiting and retaining faculty and staff who are reflective of the diverse student body and communities served by SDSU, and recruiting students who are representative of the rich diversity of the region and the world;

Career Services is a Student Service Unit in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. Its purpose is to serve the University community of over 34,000 students and graduates to:

● Engage in self-assessment;

● Obtain occupational information;

● Explore the full range of employment and educational opportunities;

● Present themselves effectively as candidates;

● Obtain optimal placement in employment or further professional preparations.

Career Services provides comprehensive career services to students and alumni of San Diego State University. Services include individualized career planning and advising, employment opportunities, current career resources, responsive technology, and career programming. Career Services is a centralized office building partnerships on and off campus to provide career opportunities and experiences that are integral to the SDSU educational experience, student retention, and life-long learning.

The Education and Health Career Development and Program Coordinator provides a vital function for student success by ensuring that students (and alumni) in the College of Education and in the college of Health and Human Services receive well-researched, comprehensive advising and programming that allows for career development, career path and career outcomes. This position meets these needs by fulfilling the following areas of responsibility:

● Career development research, programming, and Technology;

● Student-centered career advising and counseling;

● Outreach to campus and externally to promote employment opportunities;

● Accountability for tangible career-focused outcomes for each college.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

● Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with faculty and employers to support outreach, compliance and programming related to internships, mentorships, and other structured student learning experiences.

● Demonstrated ability to manage student and employer events, such as career fairs and networking programs.

● Demonstrated knowledge of the impact of academic major on career development, and the programs and services that ensure successful career development and internship / job placement of academic majors.

● Direct experience in researching/managing solutions to address the challenges of engaging under-represented college student populations in career development and university recruiting.

● Demonstrated ability to research industries, occupations, career path development, and student development within higher education.

● Demonstrated ability to provide career development-focused advising to students in higher education, and alumni of higher education institutions.

● Professional experience working within education, health, and human services fields in either higher education, or in related industries.

● Available to work regularly during evenings and weekends, and to travel.

● Experience working with diverse student populations, communities and campus partners.

● Knowledgeable of diversity, equity and inclusion programming.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
