Responsibilities

As a member of the Medical Sciences Development team, manage avariety of fund-raising programs for educationaland research purposes for the Stein Eye Institute and the Department ofOphthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. The programs andprojects include, but are not limited to, endowments, capital needs, chairs,centers, institutes. Take a key role in major gift fund raising, proposalwriting, and working with faculty, administrators, and volunteers. Additional responsibilities includeidentification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of existing andprospective donors, and corporate/foundation partnership strategies. Work with the Chair of Ophthalmology on thedesign and implementation of gift strategies and integrate campaign withmedical school mission and strategic plan.

Oversee the development and management of volunteer boards, andother related activities and projects.

Manages development and operations of JSEI websites, supports thedepartment's communications initiatives, and provides administrative support tothe SEI Director. Participation in thedevelopment of marketing and communications materials including the SEI annualreport, and management of assigned marketing and communications projects.

Supervise Development Office staff members.

Qualifications

The following are required:

Interpersonal skills to work effectively and cooperatively with donors, volunteers, faculty members, community leaders, UCLA School of Medicine staff, development colleagues, and support staff.

Knowledge of principles of fund raising, preferably in the medical setting.

Ability to:

· plan, direct, and monitor budgetary matters, including budget preparation, and administration of expenditures

· supervise, direct and motivate support staff to fulfill goals and objectives

· supervise, direct and motivate volunteers individually and in groups

· work evenings and weekends to fulfill special event-related responsibilities

Demonstrated skills in:

· developing and implementing solicitation strategies

· creating long and short-term development plans, and setting priorities

· dealing with complex issues, which arise from the elaborate interrelationships among the medical sciences entities and the University

· problem solving and team building to reach goals

· speaking effectively and persuasively to individuals and groups

· writing in order to produce professional, clear and compelling proposals and other solicitation materials, acknowledgments, reports, public announcements, and routine business correspondence; and ability to evaluate and edit any of these documents for content, style, and format

Preferred:

Skills in planning or supervising the planning of special and cultivation events, such as dinners, luncheons, receptions, meetings and tours.

Knowledge of prospect research techniques to identify potential major gift donors among individuals, foundations, and corporations.
