Summary Job Description:

This position is responsible for the creation and implementation of integrated marketing communications plans, strategies, tactics, timelines, and budgets to support the organizational goals, business objectives and priorities of the Duke University Health System (DUHS).

The director will be responsible for the primary marketing communications relationships with assigned business and clinical leaders and will lead a team of integrated marketing communications consultants and service line strategists to help entities meet both internal and external communications goals, including awareness and volume growth.

As part of CSU operations and with access to expertise, capabilities and channels within the DUHS marketing and communications department, this position acts as a key consultant and advisor to assigned business and clinical leaders on marketing and communications best practices, employee engagement strategies, consumer awareness, physician referral marketing, sponsorships, and digital and social media. With excellent facilitative leadership and project management skills, the position regularly monitors integrated marketing communication plans and tactics to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of integrated marketing communications consultants and service line strategists to perform the above duties. (25%)
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of clinical department communicators and lead through influence to ensure synergy across Duke Health missions.
  • Oversee comprehensive marketing and communications plans for CSUs across DUHS to meet organizational growth and brand goals. (60%)
  • Collaborate closely with DUHS Strategic Planning and CSU leaders to define current business opportunities and identify emerging opportunities with the help of advanced market research and analytics. Respond with marketing and communications strategies, campaigns, and tactics to support DUHS and service line goals.
  • Develop key messages, differentiators and value propositions related to various components of the plan
  • Draft internal and external communications, including copy for marketing collateral
  • Provide strategic direction to brand and campaign teams to support tactical implementation of marketing communications strategies
  • Oversee the successful execution of marketing communications plans within target budget and timelines ensuring tactical execution remains tied to plan objectives and strategies.
  • Work with analytics and campaign team to closely track plan results and regularly report them back to business and clinical leaders.
  • Serve on the senior leadership team for marketing & communications (media relations, organizational communications, analytics, digital, social, etc.) and contribute to organizational goals and building marketing capability at DUHS. (15%)
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Education: Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, business administration, healthcare administration or a related field is required.

    Experience: Seven years of related experience in communications, marketing communications or marketing with demonstrated experience in driving the implementation of strategic communications plans and tactics. Previous managerial experience is preferred.

    Work experience should include participation in communications plan development and expertise in tactics that range from developing collateral material to digital content to highly targeted, audience-specific initiatives.

    Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills a must. Must be highly organized and show attention to detail. Ability to inspire confidence, earn trust and collaborate in a way that builds relationships.

    Experience working with cancer programs in an academic medical center, hospital system, or large hospital strongly preferred.

    Required Qualifications at this Level:

    Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, marketing, communications or a related field is required.

    Experience: Five years of directly related experience is required.

    Experienced in the development, execution and measurement of multi- dimensional strategic marketing initiatives. Key experience includes working with all levels of organizational leadership in the adoption of plans and tactics, and making plan course corrections as needed based on emerging information or market evolution. Experience with emerging marketing tools (i.e. social media and customer relationship marketing) strongly preferred.
