The Director Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Salk Institute will play a key role to ensure that we carry out our responsibilities and ambitions to hire, nurture and advance a diverse workforce.

With general direction from the VP People & Culture, the incumbent will plan, support, and promote objectives to support increased diversity through outreach and pathway development, recruitment support, funding, training, and development to move the Institute’s DEI strategic plan forward.

The role of the incumbent is to advise, recommend, and foster avenues to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion at Salk through partnerships across the Institute.  The incumbent will maintain close working relationships with colleagues in the following areas:

  • Office of People & Culture
  • Office of the Chief Science Officer
  • Grants Development
  • Education Outreach
  • External Relationships
  • JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Council

In addition, this role will work closely with Salk Faculty to ensure development and implementation of programs that support the Institute’s DEI efforts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build relationships with and coach stakeholders to create awareness, support, and advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
  • Build a network of DEI champions and advocates across the institution.
  • Oversee the planning, developing, and implementation of effective strategies of the DEI team, including Salk's summer undergraduate student program and active and proposed affinity groups, that are part of initiatives of the DEI pipeline. Develop these initiatives by enhancing targeted outreach strategies, application, selection, and other processes. Use data to measure, assess, and enhance these strategies and initiatives.
  • Support various programs and committees across the institute, including the Cancer Center, to ensure effective DEI strategies are implemented, monitored, and reflect positive change for the institute.
  • Develop, foster, and maintain relationships with third-party organizations, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), foundations, and local institutions in San Diego, which can lead to partnerships, support of Salk’s DEI pipeline, and funding or professional opportunities for Salk’s trainees.
  • Design and develop data-driven metrics to measure the return on investment and impact of Salk’s DEI efforts. Use data to evaluate DEI programs to identify and address potential challenges to the success of the programs and identify potential solutions.
  • Develop effective and compelling communication to raise awareness and engagement in DEI efforts by the internal Salk community and the participation of external Salk stakeholders. This includes promoting DEI efforts through appropriate communication channels, and working with the Communications Team to create content to increase DEI awareness for internal and external audiences.
  • In collaboration with the Pre and Postdoctoral Office, Salk Cancer Center, External Relations, and Grants Development, work to identify, promote, and ultimately obtain funding to support underrepresented minorities in STEM at Salk. Efforts will include the creation of frameworks to aid in successful “Plans to Enhance Diversity” as well as editing support for scientific staff required to prepare diversity plans and diversity statements.
  • Provide advice and guidance to JEDI and conduct research related to recommendations that originate from the group. Solicits advocacy and support from JEDI for Salk DEI initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Office of People & Culture to help deepen and strengthen an inclusive, welcoming, and diverse internal culture.
  • Partner with Learning & Development Manager to develop and deliver training programs that drive DEI awareness, understanding and action, ensuring collaboration with departments/labs across the institution.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervise Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Analyst.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree is required for this role. A minimum of 5 years of increasing responsibility for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within an academic setting and two years managing a successful DEI program are also required.
  • Candidates with an advanced degree in a related discipline and 3 years’ experience will be considered.
  • Experience conducting research, analysis, evaluation, and implementation of diversity strategies using academic research outcomes, industry best practices and peer models.
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Office. Familiarity with project management software is useful in this role.
The expected pay range for this position is $125,000 to $160,000 per annum. Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
