Job Description
The Director of Career Advising will report to the Associate Provost & Executive Director and serve as a key leader of the Career Education team at Wellesley College. The position will be critical in setting a 4-year student engagement strategy built on the foundation of inclusive excellence and ensuring all students have access to and engage in exploration, experiential learning, and career action planning.

This individual will lead a team of advisors, developing and implementing a philosophy and comprehensive strategy that draws from best practices and guiding theories. The Director will work collectively with the team, ensuring strong culture and morale, and individually with each Associate Director/Advisor in the conception and implementation of resources, workshops, panels, and other programming that furthers the work of the team. Key to the success of the advising team is both the overarching strategy and daily operating procedures that ensure cohesive execution and service. Thus this role must be both strategic and operational, motivating the team around a shared vision and creating the workflows to turn that vision into reality.

The Director must also bring a spirit of collaboration that extends throughout the Career Education department and across campus. Within Career Education, this role must work closely with other Directors in employer and alumnae connections, internships, fellowships, civic engagement, and operations. Further, this role is responsible for working with the Associate Provost and Executive Director to foster a culture of career education across campus. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as a point of contact for the Division of Student Life, faculty members interested in classroom outreach, student organizations, and more.

Primary Position Responsibility:

Leadership, Supervision, and Internal Collaboration

  • Serve as a key leader in the department, contributing to department-wide strategy, professional development, and large-scale initiatives
  • Provide direction, guidance, and supervision of advising staff, encouraging and providing opportunities for staff development and growth
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Employer Engagement and the Director of Alumnae Connections to coordinate timelines and strategies for employer and alumnae engagement
  • Partner with the Director of Fellowships, Director of Internships, and Director of Civic Engagement to support experiential learning application processes, preparation programming, and post-experience reflection/articulation of learning
  • Serve as the key contact for certain College-wide and Career Education-specific programs such as the Tanner experiential learning conference and Career Education skill series designed to complement the liberal arts education through industry skill and financial literacy development
Career Advising Strategy and Operations
  • Work closely with the Associate Provost and Executive Director to develop appropriate frameworks and 4-year strategy to ensure all students have access to and engage in exploration, experiential learning, skill building, and career action planning
  • Develop necessary strategy and structure for the team, implementing a common philosophy and approach to advising, programming, training, outreach and cross-campus collaboration
  • Ensure inclusive excellence remains a top priority for every member of the team, providing ongoing training, creative outreach across all student populations, and systems for monitoring engagement levels and satisfaction
Career Outcomes and Advising Support
  • Maintain responsibility for working with the Assistant Director for Data and Technology to monitor the ongoing percentage of students utilizing services annually. Create checkpoints for each graduating class to monitor progress toward successful outcome attainment and provide support as needed to ensure as many students secure first destinations as possible
  • Manage a small caseload of advisees and programming (2-5 hours per week) focusing on gaps in advising due to vacancies
Campus Partnerships and College Initiatives
  • Serve on several cross-functional teams to promote the vision of Career Education
  • Develop and serve as a point of contact for the liaison structure to strengthen our support to diverse populations on campus
  • Represent Wellesley and the center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards, revise programs to reflect trends, and increase the center's visibility among professionals in the field
  • Participate in Wellesley committees providing representation of the career center on community issues
Supervises:
  • Associate Director/Advisor (8)
Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree and 4-6 years relevant experience required
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or other relevant advanced degree preferred
Experience Required:
  • Previous experience leading / supervising staff
  • Broad knowledge of career development theory, approaches, and strategies
Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to work independently and in a team within a culturally diverse environment
  • High level of strategic and critical thinking
  • Ability to identify patterns, cultural nuances, and navigate a complex network of constituents
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and act with discretion
  • Excellent interpersonal communication (oral and written)
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, lead a team through change, and adapt to a rapidly changing environment
Other:
  • Wellesley College is currently piloting a flexwork plan for administrative staff that incorporates both flexible hours and hybrid teleworking components, though all employees must live in New England.
