In our newly redesigned organization, the role of Invention Domain is to identify and develop disruptive technologies that will address future consumer needs and transform the beauty industry in more sustainable and disruptive ways. The function is responsible for early identification, evaluation and development of new Actives , materials and formulations , including Synthetic Biology, bio-actives and biologic formulations, Smart Materials, composites etc. in partnership with other domains such as Application Domains and Product Development Domains.

As a Global organization, the Invention Domain operates from many countries including France, Japan, India, China and L'Oréal USA is embedded in various strategic projects and leads some of them. A key measure of success for the Domain is to create high performing sustainable materials, actives, formulations and prototypes that are protected by strong, strategic and holistic intellectual property for the group. Working closely with cross functional teams, this position requires not only high technical skills, but also a strong attitude for working in multi-expertise, multi-cultural teams.

We are currently seeking a talented and innovative Director to join our Actives and Materials Invention Domain team located at our Clark, New Jersey facility for Research and Innovation. This is a highly technical position will require continuous learning and in-depth working knowledge in Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology, their applications to developing actives and formulations. Knowledge in Material Sciences, Chemistry, and experience with problem definition, experimental design/execution, and problem solving would be desired. This key Senior technical position will allow one to express oneself with in the entrepreneurial culture of the L'Oréal group and be part of creating beauty of the future.

You Will . . .

  • Translate consumer needs into technical problem statements, identify & strategize right benefit areas and actives to be co-created with internal and external partners using Synthetic Biology to address the needs and beauty aspirations of the future that would deliver various consumer perceivable benefits such as skin anti-ageing, regeneration of skin tissue, photo-protection and possibly linked to digitally controlled devices and with IoT etc.
  • Facilitate the Development and Evaluation of actives developed through Synthetic Biology using capabilities both internal and external to the Group and deliver leads based on performance at the right cost and sustainability targets
  • Design and Conduct experiments individually as well as with team in Project mode, to validate hypothesis and performance targets in an agile manner
  • Interact with various groups within Domains of Invention, Domains of Application and Development, Safety, Regulatory and Claims (SRC), to ensure new materials and composite are meeting the needs of the broader priorities.
  • Maintain a strong external focus on new technology developments and continuously map and identify opportunities through literature searches, IP landscaping and in market trends and maintain strong partnership with the IP and legal departments to ensure that the latest technology opportunities are caught and used to create competitive advantage
  • Proactively participate in discussions on new technologies and materials and formulations and contribute to strengthening of projects
  • Represent Domain of Invention to support new and existing product development and application goals as needed by projects
  • Expected to be an effective communicator and influencer across the organization to provide clear recommendations on various new formulations as well as material to both scientific and non-scientific audiences

You Have . . .
  • Completed a Ph.D. in Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology, Bio-Materials, Bio-Chemical Engineering, Bio-Chemistry, chemistry or comparable Sciences
  • 10+ years of experience in cosmetics/personal care/consumer healthcare/ chemical industries, including management of highly technical, small to mid-sized teams
  • Expertise in Design of Experiments, Efficient experimentation, data analysis, clear communication of analysis and results
  • Extensive knowledge in, Bio-Reactions, designing various Oligos, Site-directed mutagenesis, gene shuffling and other bio-technology tools and purification and scale up techniques
  • Excellent communication (Oral, written) and interpersonal skills required with high sensitivity to a very diverse global culture and ability to lead team of highly creative and independent Scientists
  • Demonstrated skills in analyzing, reporting and documenting information with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently in a matrix environment both as a team member and as a leader

  • Able to operate under general supervision with the ability to make decisions independently and assess when escalation is appropriate.
  • Responsible for new platforms of technologies for the Americas Region and will collaborate with international colleagues to ensure global consistency, efficiency, and harmonization and potentially lead global projects.
  • Responsible for managing small to mid-sized teams of highly technical talent
  • Well organized and flexible with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced highly matrixed environment while meeting established deadlines
