Job Description
As a member of the Library Collections Group, under the supervision of the College Archivist, the Digital Archivist is responsible for activities related to managing born-digital materials and digital surrogates in the Wellesley College Archives. In collaboration with Archives and Library Collections staff, the Digital Archivist will develop strategies and initiate workflows related to acquiring, accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing long-term access to digital materials. The person in this position will also perform Archives duties including student training and supervision, departmental outreach, reference, instruction, research, and collection management of both digital and physical materials in the Archives collection.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Accessions and processes digital and hybrid collections in the Wellesley College Archives.
  • Manages systems and workflows surrounding records management functions of born digital institutional records, including coordinating community outreach and instruction on best practices, records transfer, description, and preservation
  • Provides access and retrieves data from analog and a variety of storage media; provides research and reference support in person, via phone, and email to researchers using the collections; shares responsibility for monitoring the reading room
  • Plays an integral role in the implementation, development, and management of ArchivesSpace and other technologies used for preserving and providing access to digital materials. Collaborates with the Assistant Archivist and Assistant Director of Discovery Services in managing these platforms
  • Manages and trains student workers on basic digital archives tasks
  • Provides outreach and instruction related to digital archives
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • The Digital Archivist will assist in supervision of student workers
Basic Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in library science, history, or related field with a specialization or significant coursework in archives, OR graduate degree in any field with demonstrated knowledge of digital archives, such as Certified Archivist status or post-graduate training. Current master's candidates who have made significant progress towards a degree are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of and ability to keep abreast of current best practices and technologies used to manage digital archival and manuscript collections.
  • A minimum of three years of full time or equivalent experience with the ingestion, description, and preservation of born digital archival collections, including institutional records and manuscript collections
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to manage large-scale and long-term projects, including developing workflows, writing documentation, and maintaining statistics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical and descriptive metadata standards including DACS, EAD, EAC-CPF, and METS
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace or other archives collection management software
  • Experience with Bitcurator or other digital forensics technologies
  • Experience with or willingness to learn APIs or scripting languages
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs
