Plasma Design Engineer

Hypertherm is currently interviewing for a Plasma Design Engineer.

As a Design Engineer, you are responsible for:


  • The design and development of plasma cutting systems for Hypertherm's Heavy Industrial Systems and ensuring products meet market/customer requirements

  • Evaluation of the performance, safety and reliability of the power supply and related components that support the plasma cutting process (e.g. liquid and air-cooling systems, gas delivery system, torches, leads and other related accessories).

  • Component design and selection, including modeling (CFD/FEA) and hands-on engineering tests where you will apply your knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer.


Who you are and the experience you will bring:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 7-10 years of product engineering experience, or equivalent.

  • Deep comprehension and hands-on application of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, physics, and heat transfer.

  • A passion for discovering creative and cost-effective mechanical designs for fabricated (machined, formed, molded, etc.) parts and assemblies.

  • Ability to design, conduct, document and analyze hands-on engineering tests by developing fixtures and component prototyping.

  • Proficient with computer-aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools.

  • Ability to apply Statistical Tools, DOE, FMEA, Design for Assembly/Sustainability, and problem-solving techniques.

  • Ability to work with engineering technicians and provide them written and/or verbal guidance.

  • Basic engineering instrumentation knowledge such as flow measurements, thermal measurements, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems/software.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate at all levels of the organization.

  • Highly organized and self-motivated with the ability to work within a team environment.


Preferred experience to differentiate you:

  • An advanced degree (Masters/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related areas is highly desirable.

  • Experience developing new products and concepts in coordination with a multi-disciplinary team (marketing, supply chain or other engineering disciplines).

  • Experience recommending design changes, cost reductions, warranty/manufacturing improvements.

  • Experience working with product life-cycle management (PLM).

  • Demonstrated experience with DFMA and ASME Y14.5 GD&T dimensional/tolerance practices.

  • Experience leading a technical project or product development process and an understanding of industrial design and commercialization.

  • Experience providing technical leadership or mentorship in a team environment.

  • Experience working with connected products/data scientists to improve product reliability, cost, and functionality.
