SUMMARY

To work in MPT's Design & Analysis group in a leadership role, carrying out design engineering and related activities to deliver successful engineering projects. To create design solutions for powertrain, renewable energy and associated systems and components using CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) tools, such as SolidWorks, Star-CCM or ANSYS, working with and guiding junior colleagues. Technical support of business development activities in a lead role, in attending customer meetings and preparing materials for sales purposes. Interact with all relevant disciplines, such as Test & Development, Controls and Project Management, to ensure successful project delivery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working with and through leading colleagues, devise & generate ideas for design solutions to fulfil specified requirements and then develop them to completed hardware, to be manufactured by MPT or its prototype suppliers. Tasks will include designing complete or partial Internal Combustion Engines, Automotive Electrification Systems (such as hybrids), Renewable Energy (e.g. Wind Turbines), aerospace (e.g. electric aircraft powertrains), marine (e.g. electric or ICE boat powertrains), and other mechanical, thermodynamic and electrical engineering systems (e.g. custom test equipment). Provide technical leadership for projects.
  • 3D solid models and 2D drawings using CAD tools such as Solidworks, CATIA, NX.
  • Use 1D and 3D analytical models (using for example Excel, Simulink, GT-Suite, Star-CCM, ANSYS....) to support engineering design optimizations, such as modifying intake manifolds and cylinder heads to improve gas flow according to simulation results, or modifying battery packs to improve cooling according to simulation results).
  • Create product, system & component specifications and support other process documentation such as FMEAs etc, such as 2D drawings for gearbox components that can be used to make the parts. •Resolve problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, and concepts, such as applying the principles of 3D software like FEA or CFD software to make faster-running models in simpler 1D software suites such as GT-Suite or Excel, for specific purposes.
  • Apply problem solving skills to engineering challenges, e.g. figuring out how to provide appropriate power and torque for a genset by selecting engine and gearbox hardware.
  • Deliver projects on time and within budget, both as team member and as project leader.
  • Produce images and engineering data to support project leadership and management.
  • Produce written reports to communicate design concepts, details and problems, primarily for customers.
  • Check and guide the work of junior colleagues.
  • Work closely with both clients and suppliers, in addition to internal engineering teams and management, to achieve project goals.
  • Attends conferences and other forums and activities to remain informed of industry research trends and gaps.
  • Identify suitable manufacturing processes for the parts that MPT designs.
  • Work within the design department quality assurance system, completing design review paperwork as required, e.g. maintaining quality systems and process documentation controlling how the work is done.
  • Assist with quotation generation for new projects, e.g. estimating how many hours a specific task will take.
  • Ensure ethical conduct and a customer focus on customer programs.
  • Required to observe all safety rules and regulations. Must act safely and be responsible for the safety of others around the work area.
  • Maintain awareness of, and meet, the requirements of the Company Quality System.
  • Employee's duties are not limited to those stated above, but are inclusive of any tasks assigned by manager.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other related discipline. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Previous experience of a design, development, analysis or production environment is desirable but not essential.
  • At least 5 years' working experience preferred, including relevant internships.
  • Proficiency or some prior experience of one relevant CAD system, e.g. Solidworks, CATIA or Autodesk Inventor, or a good aptitude for engineering software and the ability to learn to use and apply them quickly.
  • Proficiency or some prior experience of one relevant analysis system (1D or 3D, including analysis created in Excel or other software environments) such as Star-CCM, ANSYS, or analysis packages embedded in CAD software.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental engineering principles that are relevant in powertrain systems, renewable energy, aerospace or similar fields, & component operation.
  • Detail design capability, including manufacturing tolerance application, GD&T & tolerance stack calculations, is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret 2D engineering drawings.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, also taking a technical leadership role when required.
  • Motivated self-starter.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to adapt to projects and customer needs.
  • •Good working knowledge of email, spreadsheet, word processing and presentation software. •Experience or understanding of basic manufacturing techniques and practices.
