Dean, SDSU Global Campus

Job No: 521683
Work Type:
Locations: San Diego
Categories: MPP, At-Will, Full Time, Student Services, On-site (work in-person at business location)

San Diego State University (SDSU) invites nominations, applications, and expressions of interest in its search for the next dean of Global Campus. The university seeks a forward-looking, visionary, and entrepreneurial leader with significant experience advancing non-traditional offerings and programs in higher education.

Global Campus is unique as a self-supporting entity and provides fiscal support to campus-wide initiatives. Over the past five years, Global Campus has served over 50,000 students across a range of offerings, including professional development and certificate programs; international programs; distance learning programs; online undergraduate and graduate degrees and advanced certificates; special session and extension credit programs; and offerings through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Global Campus has approximately 50 staff. The dean of Global Campus reports to the university's provost and senior vice president.

Each year, SDSU provides students with the opportunity to participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty, high impact practices, and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future. SDSU is committed to improving student success, advancing research and creative endeavors, contributing to the community, and building SDSU's culture of philanthropy. SDSU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). San Diego State University is the oldest higher education institution in San Diego. Since its founding in 1897, the university has grown to become a leading public research university.

The next dean of SDSU Global Campus will be expected to address the following leadership priorities, among others:

Provide forward-looking, visionary leadership to accelerate growth opportunities and increase access. Global Campus is a self-supporting unit that is constantly exploring new opportunities with university partners that will expand the university's impact and access to its programs. This individual should bring an entrepreneurial orientation and an ability to effectively analyze opportunities and the market for programs across a variety of modalities, including online offerings. The dean plays a critical role in effectively managing resources and creating a strategic direction that supports long-term financial stability and growth. There are no shortages of opportunities to pursue across the globe and the dean should be adept at prioritizing new projects while continuing to steward existing relationships and programs.

Ensure alignment between Global Campus programs and SDSU's mission and vision. Global Campus advances the university's strategic plan by supporting access for a diverse population of students through its microsite degree completion programs and online degree completion programs; ensuring community impact and engagement through workforce partnerships, corporate training, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute; and advancing the university's presence as a transnational institution through partnerships in Mexico, its SDSU Georgia campus, and joint programs in Palau. The dean must be able to connect the work of Global Campus to the university's broader goals and mission.

Collaborate with a wide variety of constituents. The dean is a connector and facilitator across a wide range of constituents: faculty across the university's seven academic colleges, deans, senior university leaders, the California State University System, businesses, the San Diego community, and global partners. This necessitates an individual who is able to understand the unique needs of each constituent and communicate effectively across different groups. The new leader will be viewed as a key thought partner for university leadership and should bring a global perspective while also being mindful of the SDSU culture. This individual must be exceptionally collaborative, demonstrate a commitment to shared governance, and possess an ability to navigate a variety of governance structures within the university and CSU System.

Support and empower staff. Global Campus has a well-respected, responsive, and collaborative team that has supported numerous programs across the institution over the years. There are approximately 50 staff in total. The team seeks a leader who can provide clear direction and effectively communicate goals, objectives, and priorities while also leveraging their expertise and seeking their counsel. The dean should

be an advocate for Global Campus staff who can effectively support their work and celebrate their accomplishments.

Candidate Qualifications

The next dean of Global Campus must be a forward-looking, visionary, and entrepreneurial leader with significant experience advancing non-traditional offerings and programs in higher education. This individual must have a graduate degree and a doctorate is preferred. Additionally, the successful candidate should have:

  • Exceptional financial acumen, including experience managing complex budgets, analyzing markets, and modeling enrollments, revenues, and costs for new programs.
  • A demonstrated commitment to and evidence of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in an organization and furthering access to courses and programs.
  • Experience interfacing with academic leaders and faculty to coordinate the development of blended and fully online degree programs is strongly desired, as well as a track record of ensuring compliance with state and federal laws governing technology-mediated educational delivery.
  • The ability to discern opportunities and identify priorities.

  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively represent the university and to work collaboratively across local, state, domestic, and international partners.
  • High emotional intelligence and a relational, diplomatic approach.
