Database Specialist/Senior Database Specialist

The University System Office seeks a Database Specialist/Senior Database Specialist to work as a member of a team in a large computing environment with a wide variety of clients and applications. This position plans, designs, implements, optimizes, and provides operational support for the database infrastructure of both internal and vendor developed distributed applications.

Duties and Responsibilities
Support Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and possibly other database management systems on multiple hardware platforms supporting a variety of distributed applications. Work with project teams to develop, deploy, and maintain database applications in online transactional systems, operational data stores and data warehousing environments.Assist developers with efficient SQL design and tuning.Establish and enforce database security and standards? ethically handle private data.Implement archive/purge strategies.Ensure database backups and business continuity procedures are in place.Monitor the health and performance of the databases.Perform routine maintenance and database upgrades to ensure consistently high performance, quality, and reliability of our databases.Support data conversion and migration tasks.Troubleshoot DBMS issues.Provide on-call and off-hours support and participate in weekend maintenance windows as assigned.Research, evaluate, recommend, implement and integrate new technologies, tools and strategies into the management and support of enterprise database management systems.Formally and informally provide training and education to clients on the appropriate methods, techniques and strategies with which to perform interaction with enterprise database management systems.Perform related responsibilities as appropriate for a Database Specialist or Senior Database Specialist.Additional Duties and Responsibilities - Senior Database SpecialistWork, often in an advisory capacity, with project teams, application managers and developers to establish and maintain enterprise database management systems (DBMS) environments required for the development, testing, training, evaluation, verification, implementation and operation of distributed applications, including online transactional systems, operational data stores and data warehousing environments.Hold primary responsibility for the recommendation of procedures, techniques and standards in the administration of database management systems. Perform requirements gathering, analysis and creation of scripts for execution of system and application functions.Design and implement archive/purge strategies.Design and implement database backups and business continuity procedures. Plan and perform routine maintenance and database upgrades to ensure consistently high performance, quality, and reliability of our databasesServe as a mentor to other Data Management staff members and advise those staff members on Data Management projects.Liaise with staff on other teams managing the system hardware, storage, network, application support, application development, deployment, data modeling, security, and integrations to ensure sustainable processes and procedures are developed and maintained.Education and ExperienceRequired:
Any combination totaling two (2) years from the following categories:progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related professioncollege course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 60 semester hours or Associate's Degree equals one (1) year
- 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree equals two (2) years
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or a related area. A degree in another discipline with related work experience would be acceptable.Minimum of two years' experience as a DBA supporting distributed database applications.Experience managing the MS SQL Server technology stack, to include SQL Server 2016/2017, SSIS, Analysis Service, and Reporting Service.Experiencing with MS PowerShell to automate database management tasks.Experience designing/developing databases, managing database access, managing database security/integrity and backup procedures, assisting with disaster recoveryExperience on SUN Solaris, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Linux, and Windows Server operating systems.Experience with Oracle Golden Gate replication product.Experience running RDBMSs in a cloud environment.In-depth SQL experience.Experience with data modeling concepts.Experience supporting Windows-based clients and database connectivity.Additional Education and Experience - Senior Database Specialist Required:
Three years of progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession supporting distributed database applications. College course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, may be substituted as follows:
- 60 semester hours or Associate's Degree equals one (1) year
- 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree equals two (2) years
Preferred:
Experience supporting Windows-based clients and database connectivity.Experience with Oracle 12C on UNIX/LINUX.Experience installing and maintaining an Oracle Golden Gate deployment.Experience managing a variety of RDBMS BCP technologies such as Oracle's Data Guard, and MS SQL Server Always-on and database mirroring. Experience with the Oracle ZFS file system.Experience with database encryption technologies to include Oracle TDE.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExposure to Oracle 12c on UNIX/Linux.Understanding of relational database principles.Working knowledge of application development techniques and practices.Meticulous attention to detail.Liaise with programmers, applications/operational staff, IT project managers, and other technical staff.Ability to write clear, concise computer-related documentation.Ability to prioritize work and thrive in a complex, deadline-oriented environment.Ability to integrate rapidly with an existing team? strong work ethic? commitment to excellent customer service and teamwork are essential.Familiarity with a variety of RDBMS BCP technologies such as Oracle's Data Guard, and MS SQL Server Always-on and database mirroring.Exposure to ZFS file system.Familiarity with data warehousing concepts.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Senior Database SpecialistComprehensive understanding of relational database principles.In-depth SQL experience.Demonstrated experience managing the MS SQL Server technology stack, to include SQL Server 2016/2017 Engine, SSIS, Analysis Service, and Reporting Service.Advanced proficiency in data modeling and data warehousing concepts.Meticulous attention to detail, organization and prioritization to effectively follow-up on complex and detailed work activities.Thorough working knowledge of the UNIX operating system, shell scripting and utilities.SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONThis is a full-time Civil Service IT Technical Associate position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after
April 27, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.
