Chief Objective of Position:

The Data Integration Developer will maximize the value from the University's information systems supported by the Office of Student Information Systems. This position will analyze, design, develop, implement, and maintain database-driven applications and interfaces, while focusing on managing and enhancing the university document imaging/workflow system (DMS) and the Ellucian Banner Student and Financial Aid modules. This position supports the Division of Enrollment and Students (ESS) as well as other administrative and academic offices. Under the supervision of the Director of Student Records Systems, this position will assist in development and documentation of best practices, implementation of practices that align with the goals of the ESS division and Christopher Newport University (CNU), and automation initiatives that bolster program and record integrity, while promoting the "students first" service concept. In addition to other duties, this position will serve as the backup for technology implementation, including Slate and the transfer portal VA.

Work Tasks:

In conjunction with the Director,
Programming:

  • Develop and maintain custom-built applications and interfaces.
  • Craft data input, file/database structures, data transformations, and algorithms using appropriate computer language/tools to address complex application tasks.
  • Adhere to development methodologies by documenting code, adding comments, and creating supporting materials like flowcharts, diagrams, and charts to streamline code maintenance and support.
  • Implement changes according to change management policies, ensuring all stakeholders are informed about the nature, significance, and risks associated with any solution. Use Jira for this communication.
  • Abide by the central ITS, ISO protocols for data protection, and standards set by the Virginia Information Technology Agency (VITA).
  • Monitor system changes, address problems as they arise, and ensure that implemented solutions successfully meet customer requirements.
  • Ensure web applications adhere to accessibility standards, providing a barrier-free experience for users with disabilities
Customer Service, Training and Other Duties:
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director, staff, and Information Technology Services (ITS) to address system issues related to hardware, software, and peripheral devices supporting constituent offices.
  • Design and implement training programs and materials for campus users of the DMS and other supported systems.
  • Prepare reports as requested by the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service for all constituencies including students, faculty, staff, parents, donors, guests, and other employees. Demonstrate professionalism, treat all individuals with respect, uphold the "student's first" philosophy at CNU, and consistently go above and beyond in service delivery.
  • Recognize and act in the capacity of a "responsible employee," understanding the authority and obligation to report incidents of sexual violence, student misconduct, or related concerns.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position:

  • Technical Skills & Knowledge:
    • Knowledge of relational databases and software/hardware administration.
    • Skilled in web-based transaction systems, including both back-end design/development and user interface (UI) design techniques.
    • Proficiency in programming/scripting languages such as Java, PL/SQL, ASP, JSP, jQuery, JavaScript, HTML, XML, CSS, and Apache Tomcat.
    • Comprehensive understanding of standard design/development life cycles, tools, and techniques, including software version control.
    • Analytical, troubleshooting, and independent problem-solving abilities.
  • Operational & Interpersonal Skills:
    • Aptitude for systems management with an enthusiasm to adapt to and master new technologies.
    • Skilled in examining and re-engineering operations, implementing strategies and procedures to enhance office efficiencies.
    • Ability to pursue multiple tasks simultaneously and to interpret customer business needs, translating them into application and operational requirements.
    • Strong analytical and technical skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal abilities with consensus-building and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good rapport across all employee levels.

Required Education:

Master's Degree or a Bachelor's Degree and work experiences that equates to an advance degree.

Additional Consideration - Education:

Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration or Leadership, Business, Information Systems

Experience Required:

  • Proficiency in at least one Object-Oriented Programming language.
  • Skilled with SQL, PL/SQL or both.
  • Experience in developing web applications.
Additional Consideration - Experience:

  • Proficient with Ellucian Banner (Student, Financial Aid, General modules) including self-service products, Slate, and other web applications.
  • Hands-on experience with the Common Application: application searches, export templates creation, and troubleshooting data import/mapping.
  • Adept at collaborating with academic and administrative departments to draft functional and technical specifications.
  • Skill in extracting, manipulating, and analyzing large data sets using 4th generation programming languages.
  • Demonstrated capability in designing, constructing, testing, and documenting software solutions, both web-based and desktop.
  • Expertise in generating reports or automating processes for users within large databases like Oracle.
  • Familiarity with documentation tools, e.g., Microsoft Visio, Word, and Project.
  • Aware of regulations from organizations like the Library of Virginia, State Approving Agency, U.S. Department of Education, Virginia Information Technology Agency (VITA), and others.
  • Comprehensive experience with enterprise resource systems, specifically in higher education sectors like enrollment services and student success. This includes business analysis, systems design, reporting, and user training.
  • Collaborative experience with diverse business units, tech teams, and support teams.
  • Skilled in installing, configuring, and supporting multi-tier software applications and hardware setups.
  • Proficient with tools for data extraction, desktop applications, web technology, and report writing
  • Experience with Slate and/or Hyland Perceptive Content
Salary Information:

Starting at $63,434, commensurate with education and experience.
