CTY Online Programs Instructor - Language Arts

We are looking for mission-driven problem-solvers who can thrive in CTYs diverse, collaborative, fast-paced, and results-driven work environment. We are seeking a CTY Online Programs Instructor who supports academically talented students enrolled in Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) online critical reading courses.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach lessons within curriculum defined by CTY. Lectures are not required.
  • Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives.
  • Interact independently with students using distance education technologies, primarily Moodle, phone and video conferencing software, and e-mail.
  • Provide timely written feedback to students and their parents on coursework and progress.
  • Manage student behavior and discipline in the online classroom.
  • Report concerns with students, courseware, or systems to supervisor.
  • Suggest improvements to course contents.
  • Submit hours worked via established system according to schedule provided by CTY.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in required subject area or related discipline.
  • Two years teaching or tutorial experience in required subject area or related discipline.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, especially gifted students aged 7-15 years, is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Able to work a minimum of 10 hours each week. Fifteen hours or more per week preferred.


Computer or Other Special Requirements
  • Must have a computer with broadband Internet access; familiarity with Online education technologies a plus, such as Moodle, Zoom, and Skype.


Internal & External Contacts Required
  • Collaborative relationships with the Program Manager, supervisors, and CTYOnline administrators and staff.
  • Frequent contact with students, schools, and parents via telephone, email, and web-based messaging and/or virtual meeting room software.




Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
