SUMMARY

This position provides legal support to the Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) legal department, to include contracts, litigation, and corporate matters. The Corporate Paralegal (Legal Assistant) is responsible for confidential and time sensitive material and must be able to effectively communicate in a professional manner. This position requires great attention to detail, and the Legal Assistant duties must be completed accurately and delivered with high quality in a timely manner. This is a direct report to General Counsel but will also be tasked with providing assistance and other support to legal department staff.
Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Draft legal contracts utilizing corporate templates, correspondence, and other documents
  • Assist with contract review and legal research
  • Assist with the management of Collective Bargaining Agreements and manage the corporate grievance database
  • Manage BSNC and subcontractor Certificates of Insurance and ensure the certificates are maintained in accordance with contract terms
  • Assist with contract closeout requirements, including releases of claims
  • Prepare and/or compile documents and exhibits for litigation, claims, audits and other matters
  • Responsible for support related to litigation, mediation, arbitration, and responses to complaints. Support may include review, organization, and indexing discovery documents, preparation of privilege logs, witness lists, timelines, and other summaries; and maintenance of litigation files
  • Assist in the preparation of board resolutions and other corporate documents
  • Compile and analyze data for special projects
  • Responsible for reviewing, tracking, and monitoring legislation that impacts BSNC or its subsidiaries
  • Track legal and compliance matters, including upcoming deadlines
  • Prepare and issue legal hold notices
  • Prepare accurate weekly staff meeting minutes and monthly expense reports for managers and staff
  • Review, code, and track legal invoices
  • Maintain computer and manual filing systems, including the Legal Sharepoint site
  • Carry out administrative duties such as filing, typing, copying, binding, scanning, faxing, etc.
  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
  • Support legal and contract staff as needed and perform other duties as assigned

Required (Minimum) Qualifications (applies to both this section and KSAO's)

Education and Work Experience
  • 2 years minimum paralegal experience in a legal office setting
  • At least 20 credit hours in paralegal studies or related courses
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Superb attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including but not limited to proofreading
  • General knowledge of litigation and corporate law practices, including but not limited to legal hold notices, pleadings, docketing, discovery, electronic document collection and management, and corporate policies and procedures
  • Ability to work independently and apply sound judgment to a variety of situations and collaborate effectively with other personnel to meet deadlines
  • Possess a strong desire to expand responsibility and increase experience and knowledge through on-the-job training and continuing education
  • Proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe
Preferred:
  • Paralegal Certification
  • Degree in Business Administration or related field
  • Experience with employment and labor law
  • Knowledge of ANCSA and Alaska Native Corporation practices
  • Knowledge of the FAR, DFARS, Service Contract Act, Davis Bacon Act, GSA schedules, and various contract types

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multi-line telephone system. The work described herein is primarily a modern office setting. Occasional travel may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • No supervisory responsibilities.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain access to military installations.
