GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) in collaboration with the physician investigator, is responsible for the implementation and conduct of clinical trials in the Phase 1, first in human program. The CRN has expert knowledge of oncology, treatment modalities, and the process of conducting clinical research, in particular interventional studies. The CRN functions as a member of both the research team as well as the clinical care team, acting as a liaison between the two entities. The Phase 1 Research Nurse team works in close collaboration with the Termeer Center Infusion nurses in conducting trials on all solid tumor patients. They collaborate with the care team to ensure that patients participating in clinical trials along with their families and loved ones receive comprehensive care to meet their physical, psychological, and social needs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative/Research Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the research team to establish processes and workflows that ensure protocol compliance, complete and accurate data collection and documentation and sample acquisition.
  • Develops educational programs/tools for non-research clinical staff regarding specific protocols
  • Activates new protocols and protocol amendments for nursing and operational feasibility including flowsheet development and nursing education sheet for infusion staff
  • Screens new patients and assists in enrolling new patients to clinical trials
  • Supports patients while on trial through clinic visits and answering triage phone line when patients call in and reaching out to patients in between their clinic visits.

Clinical Research Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with attending physicians to identify patients eligible for clinical trials.
  • Provides education to patients who are considering and/or participating in clinical trials along with their families/significant others
  • Collaborates with the research team to coordinate study screening and enrollment; protocol treatment and follow-up care for patients participating in clinical trials.
  • Collaborates with primary nursing staff providing care to patients receiving therapy on a clinical research trial
  • Acts as a resource to the multi-disciplinary care team related to protocol specifications such as administration guidelines for investigational agents.
  • Documents research nurse encounters in the medical record including patient education, required protocol assessments, oral study drug adherence, protocol deviations, phone encounters and follow-up.
  • In collaboration with investigators and other caregivers, assesses patients on study for complications related to therapy.
  • Communicates with referring and affiliated physicians to ensure documentation of clinical findings throughout the clinical trial as needed.


Qualifications
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of various computer applications including Microsoft Office Applications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented and meticulous in all aspects of work
  • Strong follow through skills and ability to proactively identify and solve problems

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:
  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

EDUCATION:
  • BSN required

EXPERIENCE:
  • Oncology Nursing experience preferred
  • Clinical trials research experience preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ambulatory clinic
