We are seeking a CNC Prototyping Machinist to join the RL-R Codec Avatars team at Meta Reality Labs - Research. This role will be responsible for programming; machining; working with engineers to produce models and prototypes of structures, mechanisms, and solutions for future consumer virtual reality experiences; and testing. Additionally, this role will be responsible for providing design for manufacturing (DFM) feedback to Engineering teams within the RL-R Codec Avatars lab. Our products utilize a variety of materials (from plastics to hard metals) and processes, and the CNC Prototyping Machinist will be familiar and experienced with these technologies and be able to quickly get up to speed on new technologies. The CNC Prototyping Machinist will work closely with the rapid prototyping team to become more advanced with our machinery and with the mechanical engineering team to help solve design and manufacturing issues. We move fast and are looking for a person who is driven to grow into an advanced individual contributor role finding the fastest, most efficient ways to go from CAD models to finished parts in real materials.

CNC Prototyping Machinist Responsibilities:

  • Build models and prototypes using various tools
  • CAM programming and operation of CNC equipment and manual machines
  • CNC Machining of complex and high precision parts in metal and plastic
  • Operation of fabrication equipment such as water jet or laser cutter
  • Part quality and inspection
  • Maintain shop equipment
  • Maintain safe clean working environment
  • Maintain stock material and supplies to perform day-to-day tasks
  • Interact with design engineers on part functionality, advise on the part suitability for machining
  • Demonstrate quality craftsmanship, with a desire to produce the best quality components possible


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience running 3 and 4-axis milling equipment
  • Experience running Multi axis Mill/Turn machines
  • Experience with Brother, Fanuc, Haas and HEIDENHAIN controllers
  • Fabrication experience
  • Experience in CAM software and CNC programming
  • Experience in CAD software and fixture design
  • Problem solving experience within the rapid prototyping environment
  • Experience communicating timelines and expectations to clients
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand on your feet for eight hours


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a prototyping environment with advanced CNC machine tools
  • 3+ years of experience running 5-axis milling equipment
  • Experience in a short run production environment
  • Associates Degree in machining, engineering, or certified apprenticeship program
  • Experience with Mastercam, CAMTOOL, Esprit, or SURFCAM
