Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Clinical Pharmacy Technician obtains medication histories for assigned patients/areas, independently gathers and organizes data, documents information in appropriate systems, and assists pharmacists with other duties as requested, demonstrating a high level of autonomy in doing so. The Clinical Pharmacy Technician also ensures a constant state of readiness for applicable regulatory bodies and suggests or implements process improvement activities that can be duplicated throughout the department to assist all in maintaining efficient workflow and processes.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Maintains professional attitude and appearance at all times
• Obtains medication histories for assigned patients/areas and documents information in appropriate systems
• Performs the following technical skills:
 Refers all clinical questions to a pharmacist
 Understands and consistently utilizes all existing technology and information systems in the department including, but not limited to: EPIC, Share Point, Kronos, etc.
 Consistently and accurately enters information/documentation into computer system
 Offers and implements suggestions to improve workflow; maintains efficient workflow by analyzing and adapting to changes in volume and utilizes downtime efficiently
 Works with a sense of urgency to assist patients and encourages the same sense of urgency in others
 Resolves crisis situations in a calm, constructive, and professional manner and is able to assist others in obtaining positive crisis resolution outcomes
 Alters behaviors/activities to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to age of patient served
 Maintains a clean, neat, and professional work area at all times
 Consistently completes all tasks in assigned area(s)
• Independently gathers and organizes data related to job responsibilities as requested by departmental management or other pharmacy staff on a regular basis
• Displays attention to detail in all work and work is free of errors
• Performs the following regulatory compliance responsibilities:
 Ensures constant state of readiness for The Joint Commission (TJC), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Board of Pharmacy, Department of Health, Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), and all other regulatory bodies as required
 Suggests and implements process improvement activities that can be duplicated throughout the department to assist all in maintaining a constant state of readiness and/or maintaining efficient workflow and processes
 Consistently compliant with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures
• Attends all-staff and area staff meetings
• Completes all required educational activities and competencies in a timely manner

Job Requirements

• Completion of a high school education or equivalent required
• Licenses/Certification required: Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician-in-Training License in the State of Indiana
• CPhT certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board preferred
• Must have demonstrable mathematical knowledge and pass screening math test
• Successful completion of Eskenazi Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program within 122-day probationary period
• Participation in continuing education activities to meet licensure and certification requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of medication classes, brand and generic names, doses/dosage forms
• Ability to learn pharmaceutical terminology, abbreviations, symbols. Knowledge of manufacturing, packaging and labeling of drug products, use of pharmaceutical instruments and equipment.
• Must maintain age specific and job specific competencies and licensure as described according to departmental competencies
• Maintains knowledge of relevant federal and state laws pertaining to all aspects of pharmacy practice
• Interpersonal communication skills/courtesy/tact in dealing with customers/fellow employees/hospital personnel; ability to use age appropriate communication skills
• Knowledge of metric system/mathematical calculations; able to use calculator
• Ability to follow oral and written procedures with precision and accuracy
• Accurate/efficient typing skills
• Ability to use computer for patient order entry/ordering of pharmaceuticals
