About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

Southern Methodist University (SMU) is seeking a part-time, as needed, temporary Clinical Lab Medical Assistant for the medical laboratory of the Dr. Bob Smith Health Center. The medical lab supports the Health Center's primary care practice for SMU students. The Clinical Lab Medical Assistant will perform a variety of duties, including blood draws, collection of other lab specimens, routine lab tests, and patient identification for all samples.

This is not a benefits eligible position. Temporary position. Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. M-F as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, labels and logs specimens, and prepares them for testing.
  • Performs basic technical tasks (placing samples in automated analyzer) to perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Stores and manage specimens according to retention protocols.
  • Monitors and maintains accurate patient identification and confidentiality for all samples in accordance with departmental protocol.
  • Ensures specimens sent to reference laboratories are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies.
  • Answers telephone and other duties as needed.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.

Two years related laboratory experience required. Related college laboratory classes may be accepted in lieu of experience.

CMA certification is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent medical lab skills, with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Knowledge of medical equipment, medical protocol and language, medical procedures and laboratory tests is essential.

Must be able to adhere to Health Center protocols, quality standards and patient care.

Candidate must have excellent verbal communication and customer service skills, demonstrating professionalism and respect with patients and Health Center colleagues.

Candidate must be able to ensure confidentiality and sensitivity of medical records and patient information at all times. Must follow HIPAA compliance regulations and Health Center policies.
