Supervises and coordinates activities of the lab staff engaged in performing laboratory tests. Performs routine laboratory testing, including chemistry, hematology, and microbiology. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Clinical Lab Supervisor's responsibilities encompass all the daily operation of the lab: staffing, workflow, quality, safety and regulatory compliance

1. Provides direct personnel supervision in special test procedures, and in personnel matters. With Lab Director, interviews applicants. Coordinates training and assists in orienting and training new laboratory staff. Is responsible for assigning and scheduling staff for 24/7 coverage of clinical lab. Responsible for staff recruitment, train staff, evaluate employee performance, and recommend disciplinary action. Complies with all laboratory and HR policies to perform job essential functions.

2. Performs STAT and routine testing in: blood bank. chemistry, hematology/coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology. Responds to STAT requests in a timely manner and ensures staff compliance. Monitors workflow to prevent backlog, and looks for continuous improvement opportunities for quality, patient safety, and efficiency.

3. Develops and implements a program of planned maintenance for all laboratory equipment; interfaces with sales and field representatives as necessary; and makes recommendations to the Director regarding acquisition of new equipment, or modification and repair of old equipment.

4. Prepares for and participates in regulatory reviews and inspections, self-inspections, including CAP, CLIA, DHHS and TJC. Ensures continual readiness and compliance; Technical/department specific checklists or particular areas of Laboratory general, safety, personnel, and quality/quality improvement.

5. Acts as the technical, clinical, customer service liaison to all WDH departments, lab sites, Lab Medical Director, and referring physicians. Responds to and resolves all customer issues.

6. Participates in analysis of CAP specimens and troubleshoots technical issues as necessary. Ensures proper handling of CAP specimens, per CAP guidelines - and assists technologists with this. Ensures adequate rotation of CAP specimens throughout laboratory per CAP guidelines. Ensures CAP specimen results are completed before deadline.

7. Performs instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control testing. Works with vendors as necessary. Submits data to vendor for interlab comparison and review reports in a timely manner. Participates in analysis of CAP specimens and troubleshoot technical issues as necessary. Ensure adequate rotation of CAP specimens throughout laboratory. Ensures CAP specimen results are entered before deadline. Submits CAP specimen results as directed by the Lab Director.

8. Responds to findings according to department and agency timelines and ensures remedial actions are implemented and maintained.

9. Assists in reviewing and implementing departmental operating policies and procedures. Participates in developing, reviewing and updating policy and procedure manuals, instruction manuals and related documentation for clinical labs. Recommends and assists in implementation of new methods, instruments, and informatics to laboratory director.

10. Evaluates staff via competency checklists, continuing education. Evaluates staff via direct observation, cognitive and other methods according to regulatory guidelines. Completes evaluation within defined timeline. Works collaboratively with Lab Director to properly evaluate staff.

11. Evaluates quality control data, troubleshoots and takes action in a timely manner as necessary for outliers. Recommends the types of tests, equipment and methodologies employed in the laboratories, based on changes in technology, trends in usage, and costs of services and staffing. Performs and assigns correlation studies as appropriate. Assists with quality improvement data and performs all QA reporting in a timely manner.

12. Participates on the hospital committees as assigned/delegated by Laboratory Director.

13. Develops and monitors systems for the safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous and infectious substances and the protection of patients and staff. Assists with staff safety training.

14. Ensures staff are compliant with policies/procedures set forth by section supervisors. Performs Supervisory review in the LIS and on manual worksheets for accuracy, in a timely manner and takes corrective action as necessary. Monitors pending labs - including in house testing and send outs. Takes action to ensure timely completion.

15. Develops familiarity with other area laboratories to locate places to send specimens for esoteric tests. Provides information to outside labs and physicians regarding unique tests.

16. Assists with lab inventory management and development, preparation and monitoring of lab budget. Ensures that department budget is met.

17. Participates in professional organizations, seminars and continuing education. Coordinate and facilitate staff meetings in partnership with Laboratory Director.

18. This position may include ~30% on-bench responsibility, occasional holiday, off shift and weekend coverage.

Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
• Minimum 5 years' experience as a generalist medical technologist and two years supervisory experience. Laboratory computer skills as well as effective communication skills.

Education Minimum Required
• Bachelor's Degree

• Effective communication and analytical skills; strong customer service, inter-personnel skills
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to provide support, direction, and development of staff.
• Ability to make decisions timely and independently.
• Ability to support work environment 24 hours/7 days a week.
• Knowledge of computer based software programs such as Excel, MS office, and MS Word, Sunquest. etc.

Licensure and/or Certifications Required
• ASCP certification
