Job Summary

This position will operate under the Biorepository Operations Manager to perform advanced laboratory services related to specialized specimen processing and assist in the design and implementation of new porotocols. Responsibilities include: working with PIs and study coordinators to determine specific protocol requirements from multiple studies (internal and external collaborators); maintenance and monitoring of critical facility equipment used in the sample processing; assisting in new equipment validations and startups; and, generating data critical to final equipment reports.

Perform advanced and specialized laboratory procedures in the molecular biology and cell culture laboratory. Procedures include, but are not limited to, creation, immortalization and cryopreservation of lymphoblastoid and fibroblast cell lines; isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, extraction of DNA from tissue, whole blood, buffy coats, cell pellets and saliva; extraction of total RNA and miRNA from whole blood; spectrophotometric analysis of DNA and RNA samples; gel electrophoresis; and separation of whole blood components in the stat lab. Required to make reagents for samples processing and conduct QC on reagents. Expected to design, modify and maintain appropriate documentation of processing activities.

Receive international and local sample shipments. Accession samples into Oncore Database and other required systems. Maintain chain of custody tracking thru sample storage locations while processing or in permanent storage locations. Pull samples from locations to prepare for sample distributions. Standardize DNA for shipments using robotic handling equipment (i.e. Tecan). Sub-aliquot as requested by funder. Trained in IATA shipping requirements. Ship samples locally and internationally.

This position will assist in the development of technical SOPs and creating work flow sheets for protocol specific processing. They will train new staff members and hourly employees in designated sample processes. They will support implementation of new SOPs and comply with all established SOPs. Actively participate in SOP revisions in coordination with the QA Specialist and the Biorepository Operations Manager.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in biology/chemistry/biotechnology or equivalent and one year of laboratory experience; OR master's degree (BS/BA) in biology/ chemistry/ biotechnology or equivalent and six months of laboratory experience.

Ability to use scientific rules for laboratory directives and for troubleshooting. Ability to perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Strong communication skills. Ability to prioritize and manage time. Ability to work on multiple tasks and work well as part of a team.

Working Conditions / Demands

Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without an accomodation.

Equipment utilized: Centrifuges, pipetting devices, vortex, incubators, -80 freezers, LN2 tanks, controlled rate freezers, biologic safety cabinets, and personal computer.
