The Eukaryotic Pathogen, Vector and Host Informatics Resource (VEuPathDB.org) seeks a experienced biologist or statistician with experience in bioinformatics & computer programming -- or a computer scientist with experience in bioinformatics -- to join a long-standing established project with a team of 40+ developers and biologists that is spread across multiple performance sites to develop and maintain VEuPathDB.org, a set of highly-visible websites that integrate diverse genomic datasets relevant to global infectious disease biology. The candidate will work collaboratively with biologists and software developers to translate requirements generated by our scientific user communities into effective data representations and web interfaces / applications, using appropriate statistical and algorithmic approaches.
Job Description
The Eukaryotic Pathogen, Vector and Host Informatics Resource (VEuPathDB.org) is a large, multi-institution project that develops scientific data-mining websites used by researchers worldwide to study selected vector, microbial pathogen such as those responsible for malaria and enteric disease and fungi. VEuPathDB models and presents genomic, post-genomic, systems biological and clinical epidemiology. studies in intuitive, data-mining interfaces.
DUTIES:
The Eukaryotic Pathogen, Vector and Host Informatics Resource (VEuPathDB.org) seeks a biologist or statistician with experience in bioinformatics & computer programming -- or a computer scientist with experience in bioinformatics -- to join an established team of 40+ developers and biologists to develop and maintain VEuPathDB.org, a set of highly-visible websites that integrate diverse genomic datasets relevant to global infectious disease biology. VEuPathDB supports research by tens of thousands of researchers worldwide working on eukaryotic pathogens (protozoan parasites, pathogenic fungi) or invertebrate vectors of infectious disease. The successful candidate will interface with scientists to acquire and familiarize themselves with key genomic-scale datasets, build tools to load these data into a relational database, and integrate data into VEuPathDB websites.
This candidate will also work collaboratively with biologists and software developers to translate requirements generated by our scientific user communities into effective data representations and web interfaces / applications, using appropriate statistical and algorithmic approaches. The candidate should have experience working collaboratively (e.g. using git) within a Linux environment, and is expected to be proficient in a scripting language (e.g. Perl, Python). Candidates with experience in SQL, R, Nextflow, Groovy, Docker, or web development are strongly preferred. Participation in the preparation of technical documentation and attendance at relevant professional meetings is encouraged. Note that this candidate will join a long-standing project that is spread across multiple performance sites.
Senior Level:
A Senior level hire is expected to provide leadership and responsibility for projects including mentoring others.
QUALIFICATIONS:
JUNIOR LEVEL: BS in Computer Science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 2-3 yrs. Relevant work experience required. An active interest in and experience with bioinformatics and biostatistics applications is required and experience in genomics is a strong plus. Working knowledge of and experience with UNIX, R, and a scripting language such as Perl or Python are all highly desirable. An active interest in web programming (JSP, CSS, JavaScript/Typescript and React or similar framework) is desirable, and experience is a strong plus.
SENIOR LEVEL: BS (Masters or PhD highly preferred) in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 3-5 yr relevant work experience required (5-6 yr for D level). An active interest in and experience with bioinformatics and biostatistics applications is required, and experience in genomics is a strong plus. Working knowledge of and experience with UNIX, R and a scripting language such as Perl or Python are all highly desirable. An active interest in web programming (JSP, CSS, JavaScript/Typescript and React or similar framework) is desirable, and experience is a strong plus.
Targeted Pay Range:
Junior Level (C Level): $51,824 to $78,000
Senior Level (D Level): $61,046 to $114,000
This Targeted Pay Range is only applicable to this job posting. All salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
