SUMMARY:

The Animal Care Facility Intern at McLean Hospital offers hands-on training in laboratory animal husbandry and care. Under the guidance of Managers, Veterinarians and Team Leads, the Intern will work alongside Research Animal Specialists in biomedical research facilities. Through this opportunity, the intern will gain experience using organizational tools and management strategies to improve the quality of care offered to laboratory animals in the support of biomedical research.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Animal Care Facility Intern will report to the Sr. Animal Facilities Operations Manager and have the following responsibilities:

  • Biology, husbandry, and basic veterinary care of common vertebrate species used in a laboratory setting
  • Handling and sample collection methods
  • Rodent breeding strategies
  • Disease surveillance and colony health management
  • Occupational safety
  • Regulatory oversight & ethics


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Interested in Animal Science or Veterinarian care. Focused on those working toward their Undergraduate degree in these types of fields and with availability over the summer.

The Intern is expected to start early June 2022 and commit to at least mid-August, 2022 (Dates are flexible to accommodate school schedules). It is expected that candidates can work the entire duration of the internship. The schedule is working weekdays only

SKILLS AND ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Able to effectively work in a team environment
  • Customer-focused attitude
  • Commitment to animal welfare
  • Ability to learn Mclean and Partners computer applications.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and perform repetitive motions required for animal husbandry
