The Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS or the Center) is a research, education, and public service organization dedicated to advancing an ecologically sustainable and socially just food system.

Our status as a Center within the Division of Social Sciences at UC Santa Cruz enables us to undertake projects in many disciplines in the pursuit of these goals, and to work with faculty, staff, and students from throughout the university. Beyond the campus we collaborate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), growers, community members, visiting students and researchers, and state and federal agencies, including UC Cooperative Extension and the US Department of Agriculture. The Center's work includes both theoretical and applied research; academic education and practical training; and community outreach and public service for audiences ranging from local school children to international agencies.

Job Overview

Involves working with students, faculty, and staff, and students to develop, coordinate, and promote effective sustainability initiatives related to the University's academic, operational and outreach functions. Develops and / or implements a sustainability strategy and performance metrics for a department, campus or hospital by integrating sustainability into long-range planning and ongoing operations. Enables University stakeholders to improve sustainability outcomes; coordinating and project managing programming and activities related to sustainability and undertaking research on sustainability-related topics. Facilitates cross department collaboration across operational, academic, and clinical departments. Coordinates and tracks operational programs including energy, food service, waste management, recycling, resource efficiency, greenhouse gas reporting/ reductions, transportation, supply chain, facilities, biodiversity and design for environment. Promotes connections and synergies between environmental protection, economic stability, and social equity in the University's activities.

Provides professional level analytical and technical support on a variety of projects related to the University sustainability efforts. Fully analyzes issues and problems, gathers data and information, finds and evaluates alternatives and makes sound recommendations. Under general supervision of the Food Systems Education & Research Program Specialist and the Field Manager, coordinates CASFS site production for the Basic Needs campus outlets, assists in campus-level Basic Needs services coordination, and advises Food System Working Group (FSWG) student staff and program activities.

The incumbent's work will support the CASFS mission to advance agroecology and equitable food systems through experiential education, participatory research, agricultural extension, and public service. The incumbent will support CASFS efforts to integrate equity into all aspects of CASFS work and programming.

  • Facilitates student engagement in all production related activities: propagation, planting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting, cultivating, delivery, rodent control, general site maintenance.

  • Overlooks daily and weekly operations of Food Systems Working Group.
  • May supervise student interns on sustainability projects.
  • Updates and maintains training materials and trains student staff.
  • Promotes and organizes quarterly festivals/mixers (such as the Harvest Festival, Student Leadership Mixer, and Strawberry & Justice Festival - events).

  • Coordinates program planning (produce marketing, post-harvest, and delivery for connection with dining halls, student pop-up, food pantry, and additional avenues), communication and training for departments with sustainability projects.
  • Identifies and provides outreach to networks across the campus food systems by marketing and outreaching to the rest of campus. Reviews, assesses, and develops programs and procedures in food service systems.

  • Collaborates with department units, subject matter experts and communication experts across the organization to leverage sustainability efforts.
  • Participate in CASFS staff and committee meetings and planning. Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares information for use in discussions, and meetings of internal and external constituents.

  • Applies professional concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies, initiatives, processes or functions that are related to sustainability.
  • Supports research field preparations and management related to production and data collection. Provides recommendations and guidelines involving sustainability & basic needs programs / initiatives.

  • Summarizes and presents information on assigned sustainability issues and opportunities for internal or external constituents.
  • Attends relevant campus and communities meetings to share our efforts and maintain a collaborative approach to the Food Systems Working Group efforts.
