We are currently looking for an Automation Engineer to join our team! The qualified individual will be responsible for the design, documentation, testing, and assisting with delivery of PLC and SCADA software components for custom and standard capital equipment used for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical product manufacturing (example equipment types include chromatography, buffer formulation, virus filtration, oligonucleotide synthesis). Essential Responsibilities:
  • Interpret design requirements based on internal specifications, customer specifications, and knowledge of the product application.
  • Create and/or review design documents, including technical drawings and specification documents.
  • Configure PLC hardware and map IO based on electrical schematics and hardware design specifications.
  • Design and write Unit-level PLC code for batch process control according to the ANSI/ISA-88 (S88) standard, including:
  • Signal Processing Routines
  • Control Modules
  • Equipment Modules
  • Process Phases
  • Reporting/Monitoring Phases
  • Supervisory Phases
  • Unit Operation/Batch Management Routines
  • Design and configure a SCADA application, including:
  • Installation of software(s)
  • Configuration and management of SQL database
  • Configuration and management of historian software and collectors
  • Configuration of HMI screens
  • Configuration of HMI tags (including linking to PLC tags)
  • Configuration of OPC servers
  • Configuration of Alarms, Events, and Audit Trail
  • Configuration of tiered privilege/access
  • Basic scripting for custom HMI functions
  • Integration of/Handshaking with bespoke software applications
  • Complete peer code reviews and internal testing of automated systems prior to turnover to the project engineering team.
  • Troubleshoot device and electrical component operation.
  • Support engineering commissioning, responding to bugs and requests via issue-tracking software.
  • Manage integration to 3rd party devices, equipment, or distributed control systems in the customer's plant.
  • Record and document code changes, assessing impact to existing validation to advise on required regression testing.
  • Travel to customer site for supervision of installation, testing of installed equipment, and integration to peripherals.
  • Address customer issues for installed equipment in person, over the phone, or via web-based tools by effectively communicating solutions to customer and providing effective training to relevant personnel.
  • Provide labor estimates for proposed projects and changes to contribute to commercial offers and internal planning.
  • Employ effective communication strategies with internal and external project stakeholders, including recurring and ad-hoc meetings as appropriate.
  • Document and communicate project status and critical paths with stakeholders.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical)
  • 3-5 years' experience in the automation of PLC-based SCADA systems (preferably in an S88/batch context)
  • 2+ years' experience with Allen Bradley/Rockwell PLCs
  • 2+ years' experience with GE iFIX and/or Rockwell FactoryTalk View SE
  • Proximity to the Glenview, IL office is not required (candidates can work out of home office), but is preferred
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015 preferred) and current Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Familiarity with 21CFR Part 11 is preferred
  • Awareness of personal strengths, weaknesses, and impact of decisions on wider team, department, and company
  • Eagerness to learn new technical information, new processes, and new skills
  • Willingness to assist outside of everyday responsibilities when required
  • Possess these qualities: energetic, positive, strong interpersonal communicator, detail-oriented, ethics-minded, problem-solver, adaptable, team-oriented, customer-focused, and self-motivated

Physical Demands:
  • Travel 3 to 10 weeks in a year to visit the Glenview, IL office (if remote), or domestic and international customer sites for equipment installations or other activities (depending on individual assignments and quantity and scope of active projects)
  • Occasional exposure to pressurized liquids, live electrical circuits, and/or chemical solutions requiring proper personal protective equipment (provided)
