A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking an exempt Network Engineer on the Kirksville, Missouri campus. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President, ITS Operations and is responsible for creating network infrastructure project proposals by researching and compiling University business and technical requirements; negotiating with manufacturers, vendors, and service providers to obtain required functionality, services, and optimal pricing; leading implementation of network infrastructure projects to support university initiatives; coordinating and providing oversight in all aspects of ITS network infrastructure daily operations and maintenance; providing network-related escalation support to team members as well as ATSU staff and students; and leading and mentoring network infrastructure team employees.

This position may be performed as a telecommuter under ATSU Policy No. 90-106.

Major Job Duties

  • Lead team to maintain and monitor over 300 network LAN, WAN, and data center systems across 16 plus
    geographic regions
  • Design and build networks to support University initiatives
  • Implement manufacturer best practices to achieve optimal system performance
  • Guide team to develop a list of fiscal year project proposals and calculate the budget required for completion
  • Work with Director of Network Operations to prioritize and align project proposals with University initiatives
    and budget
  • Create and maintain network diagrams and documentation
  • Respond to requests for network expansion, moves, and changes - delegate as required
  • Monitor network systems and services performing needed changes in accordance with the departmental
    change and control procedures
  • Prioritize and assign network infrastructure support tickets
  • Replace or update equipment as needed
  • Establish regular meetings with key vendors and manufacturers
  • Act as technical team lead and mentor team members
  • Keep ATSU network running smoothly
  • Design and implement new networks to support ATSU strategic plans
  • Provide technical leadership and project management
  • Mentor and develop team members
  • Provide escalation technical assistance for Service Desk staff and other departments
  • Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
  • Data Center Services
  • Monitoring and Alert Management
  • Network and Connectivity Management
  • Address other duties as assigned

Skills/Requirements

  • Four year IT-related college degree or equivalent experience with networking technology
  • Knowledge of Cisco and other network technologies (CCIE preferred or equivalent experience)
  • Knowledge of TCP/IPv4, DHCP, DNS, Ethernet, SSL, 802.11gn/ac/ax, RADIUS, WPA2, NetApp SANS, Port-Channels, Routing,
    EIGRP, BGP, VRF, Switching, SAN switching, data center networking, wireless, security, firewalls, QoS, SQL Server, VPN, DMVPN, AnyConnect, Infoblox DNS, DHCP, IPAM, Windows Server, VMware, Splunk, Active Directory, FCoE
  • Knowledge of Arista Hardware and Cloud services
  • Knowledge of Infiot Hardware and Cloud services
  • Ability to apply network design principles to meet technical requirements in a reliable and scalable way
  • Ability to identify and manage areas of risk in complex projects or tasks
  • Ability to articulate and clearly illustrate complex technical information
  • Ability to analyze a product for weaknesses or defects prior to purchase
  • Ability to expedite problem solving processes by knowing which resources to engage and at what point to engage them
  • Ability to properly diagnose and solve problems in the field (in some cases under high pressure)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret large amounts of technical literature (example: configuration guides often range from 600-1000 pages)
  • Strong communication skills - communicate easily with personnel inside and outside ATSU
  • Careful planner who takes the time to consider the implications of a particular design
  • Team leader who shares knowledge with team members
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and completely

  • Ability to lift, carry, and work in physically challenging environments
  • Ability to lift and install large network switches or carry and install heave (+50 lbs) UPS batteries
  • Ability to climb a 12 ft ladder to install wireless access points on the ceiling
  • Ability to walk and climb a ladder on the roof of tall buildings to maintain outdoor wireless equipment
