  • 15+ years of experience/knowledge in key functional areas of innovation, commercialization (technology transfer) and external engagement.
  • Proven ability of working effectively with internal and external stakeholders of all levels.
  • Progressive leadership experience in a university technology transfer office preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; a flexible personality and ability to handle peak stress periods with logic and a calm demeanor.
  • Demonstrated track record of advocating for appropriate operating resources, demonstrating the value of the office to leadership, and managing within the established budget.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) preferred.
  • Relevant knowledge of the sciences or experience working with scientists across various
    disciplines.
  • Experience managing a complex, faculty-driven academic environment, as well as effectively collaborating with a wide variety of industry and legal professionals in a professional and positive manner.
Job Description:

Responsible for providing leadership for the innovation, commercialization, and
external engagement functions of the Office of the Chief Research Officer (CRO). Ability to mentor others and contribute to their professional growth through increasing responsibilities over time.

Job Duties:

The AVP is a senior level executive who provides leadership for the innovation, commercialization and external engagement functions of the Office of the Chief Research Officer (CRO). The AVP will be responsible for driving transformative and sustainable initiatives to translate academic discoveries from Texas State University into commercial products to benefit society, impact global public health, and improve the overall quality of life. The incumbent collaborates with the CRO and senior leadership to set an agenda that defines the University's program in innovation and external engagement. The AVP creates partnerships that link university, state and industry resources to address technology commercialization and external engagement needs; ensures that faculty, staff and students are provided guidance and information on the university policies as they relate to intellectual property as well as the processes/procedures involved in seeking and obtaining patent protection for inventions, and in the marketing and licensing of university technologies; and leverages appropriate technologies arising from the discoveries of university faculty/staff/students in order to enhance university's educational and research missions.Internally, the AVP will play a critical role, working in collaboration and partnership with Deans, other VPs, and University leaders, in heading up a cultural and organizational innovation initiative to create the environment and mechanisms to motivate and empower faculty inventors to recognize marketable research opportunities and discoveries and to bring these new ideas forward for commercialization.
Externally, the AVP will be an advocate for innovation, commercialization and external engagement in order to establish relationships with both, domestic and global companies/organizations/institutions and to structure partnerships to advance new technologies and research collaborations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the University's innovation engagement strategy to create a vibrant, exhilarating environment where students, faculty, and the investment community work together to advance the University's most promising innovations.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the office, including supervision of permanent and
  • temporary staff. Ensure University resources are properly leveraged. Recruit and hire staff
  • with the skills to build high performing teams in the offices. Provide coaching and career development to staff and interns.
  • Handle communication about outcomes of the innovation sphere to internal university and external stakeholders in alignment with university and portfolio communications strategies.
  • Establish relationships with Deans, VPs, faculty inventors and key stakeholders to affect a
  • cultural change that encourages innovation and invention disclosure for commercialization.
  • Manage the intellectual property protection process with outside patent counsel and work with internal/external patent counsel on infringement of University intellectual property (IP).
  • Oversee and direct negotiation and approval of commercialization and other external engagement related agreements in collaboration with counsel & contracts management office.
  • Implement and manage strategies to build external awareness of innovation opportunities
  • Implement the strategic initiatives of the CRO related to innovation, commercialization and external engagement, including the creation of a central location for the innovation ecosystem at Texas State.
  • Establish partnerships that can benefit the university's larger innovation ecosystem including technology acceleration, incubation and external engagement.
  • Direct faculty/campus outreach through lectures, workshops, events, and other mechanisms.
  • Create and implement technology and startup company funding programs, including seed and venture stage programs.
  • Initiate, coordinate and manage relationships with external partners including companies and foundations that promote the educational, scientific, and scholarly mission of the university.
  • Formulate and execute initiatives, projects, and strategies focused on faculty research collaborations and advancing the innovation ecosystem at Texas State and in the region.
  • Travel (domestic and international) to create and facilitate engagement opportunities to enable, expand, and enrich external industry collaborations and connections.
  • Comprehensive understanding of university-industry research centric partnerships and the academic research environment
