This transformational role will provide strategic leadership and visionary direction for an institution committed to an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to student health and well-being. The AVP will champion the directors of the Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, University Recreation, Health Promotion, and Disability Services in their successful management of operations and the advancement of a robust and coordinated suite of health and wellness programs and services.

The Role

Reporting to and serving as a principal advisor to the Vice President for Student Development, the AVP is responsible for all aspects of student Health and Well-being, including long-term planning; facilities/space planning; advocating for resources and identifying efficiencies within and across departments; evaluating health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services that address the needs of the student community; and serving in a critical role in student advocacy, staff development, strategic planning and campus culture.

This position is responsible for the supervision of staff personnel which includes 41 full-time, approximately 65 part-time and contractual and approximately 140 student employees. Responsibilities also include oversight of an operating budget of approximately $3.9M and revenues of approximately $965,000.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversight of and leadership for the Health and Well-being unit which includes Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, University Recreation, Health Promotions, and Disability Services.
  • Manages facilities including Weinstein Center for Recreation, Well-Being Center, Disability Services, Intramural and Recreational Fields, Tennis Courts, High Ropes Course, and Disc Golf Course.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor short and long-range planning for all programs and facilities consistent with the mission of the university.
  • Develop, monitor, and annually review and update all departmental budgets to provide sound fiscal management for the department including all operating, revenue, and personnel budgets.
  • Oversee and manage all departmental capital projects including improvements and expansion of indoor and outdoor well-being buildings and fields.
  • Foster and promote an integrated team approach with overall responsibility for departmental personnel including recruitment and retention of staff, providing opportunities for professional development and growth, scheduling and assigning work, reviewing performance, and recommending salary increases, promotions, and other personnel actions.
  • Develop long term strategic plans, preparation and presentation of reports, assist with fundraising, and development of staff and programs.
  • Provide an effective risk management program by developing and enforcing policies and procedures, emergency action plans, staff training, conducting safety/accident prevention programs and conducting inspections and safety audits.
  • Develop and monitor departmental goals and assessment plan to assess member needs and interest.
  • Serve as a core member of the Student Development Leadership Team; provide counsel on matters related to the health and well-being of students and the campus community to institutional leadership.
  • Chair Student Development Space Allocation Committee and Health and Well-being Student Advisory Council. Service on University and Student Development committees as needed.
  • Develop strong relationships to increase co-curricular opportunities with academic, Student Development, and other university departments and programs.
  • Partner with community stakeholders to create a wider network of support and success channels to achieve health and wellness centered outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:
  • Master's Degree in Public Health, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Sport Management, Business Administration or related field required. Terminal degree in an appropriate field is preferred.
  • At least 7 years of work experience, preferably in a public health/health related field or a campus-based student development role with an emphasis on student well-being
  • 5-10 years of experience managing budgets is preferred
  • 5-10 years of experience supervising professional staff is preferred
  • Previous experience in higher education setting is preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated commitment to student educational success and understanding of the needs of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and dynamics that affect student health and well-being.
  • Commitment to an integrative health care model in which counseling/mental health and medical health services are closely aligned and operate with as much collaboration as professional standards of care and ethics allow
  • Understanding of policy issues related to higher education and health care programs
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and data-informed decision making and the systems and assessment measures that support these processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high visibility role on campus and ability to build relationships and trust with many constituents
  • Effective communicator, able to present complex issues to a variety of audiences, and able to inform written communications about important public health matters
  • Strong organizational skills required to balance a variety of tasks with a high degree of competency and accuracy
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise as a manger, including skills related to systems thinking, staffing patterns and needs, budget management, student services, and program development
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development including active engagement in professional associations and alertness to evolving trends and emerging best practices
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including demonstrated leadership in increasing access and equity in healthcare and wellbeing practices
