GENERAL SUMMARY

The Associate Chief Medical Officer (CMO) reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Brigham Health (BH) and the Senior Vice President, Clinical Services, Ambulatory, Real Estate and Hospital Operations and has broad oversight for professional and academic activities, strategy and performance within the Brigham Ambulatory Practices, as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President. Her/his main responsibilities are to design, lead and implement the Brigham Ambulatory strategy to ensure ambulatory patients have access to high quality, equitable, safe, and cost-effective care at the appropriate time and in the most appropriate care setting. The scope of responsibilities will include designing and implementing Ambulatory Strategies across Brigham Health to:

  • Improve access;
  • Enhance ambulatory operations;
  • Establish a culture of quality and safety; and
  • Support Network Development
In collaboration with the PHS, Brigham Health, & Department leadership and other cross-functional leaders from Marketing, Quality & Safety, Analysis, Planning, Strategy & Improvement, the Vice President sets the organizations' strategic directions across the Brigham family's (BH) Ambulatory Enterprise and is the Brigham's representative for ambulatory operations at MGB.

Responsible for leading asset management & planning; monitoring and improving access to services; and improving quality and performance improvement through dashboard development and data analysis of financial and non-financial measures.

Fosters solid business discipline and a strong customer service focus to promote practice efficiency and support a growing Ambulatory network that aligns with MGB strategic initiatives, specifically focused on access.

This individual will have a successful track record as an academician, clinician, and administrative leader at a large academic medical enterprise. The responsibilities of the ACMO-AS/VP may include oversight of clinical programs, development and implementation of key operational initiatives, Pharmacy functions and spending, faculty Professionalism, PA services, Medical Staff Office functions, Quality and Safety concerns, clinical integration within BH, medical education and postgraduate training as it pertains to the Medical Affairs of Ambulatory Services. This individual will be an integral member of the Ambulatory leadership team collaborating with the SVP of Ambulatory Services, the Executive Nursing Director of Ambulatory, and will partner with departmental clinical and administrative leaders across BWH, BWFH, and MGB leadership.

BRIGHAM HEALTH

CMO OFFICE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The CMO office is comprised of the CMO, Associate CMOs, medical directors, the administrative director, administrative/executive assistant and leaders overseeing areas such as Physician Assistant Services, , Pharmacy, Department of Quality and Safety, and a series of other Medical Director-led programs. In addition, the office provides shared oversight of the CMO function at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital. The BH ACMO may be asked to support and lead any of the above functions and others as required to support medical affairs across BWH. Each ACMO will be supported by a shared Executive Assistant and benefits from a range of centralized administrative support functions deployed across the organization.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Integrate the CMO function into the operational activities of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital

In conjunction with other senior leaders in the Active Asset Management program (AAM), and under the guidance of the CMO, the ACMO will participate in daily operations as well as lead, develop and oversee the implementation of specific strategies to effectively utilize BWH and MGB ambulatory assets and resources. The ACMO is an active member of the AAM weekly performance review and daily management practices and will have direct leadership responsibility in the AAM program evolution, initiatives, and outcomes.

As it pertains to the Ambulatory arena, the ACMO-AS will be responsible for coordinating AAM strategies and initiatives with strategies set in the office of the CMO, recognizing when there are dependencies and synergies. The ACMO-AS will be responsible for enhancing policies and resources to support the achievement of high-quality equitable care, exceptional experience for employees and patients, and the delivery of care at the lowest cost possible. The ACMO will be expected to utilize the AAM program infrastructure and governance to support these strategic objectives and lead care model redesign and practice. Finally, the ACMO may be responsible to develop, deliver, and participate in timely and relevant multi-modal messaging and communication for all components of the AAM program that are relevant to the BH ambulatory areas.

While all senior leaders at BWH have a role to play in advocating for patients and patient care, the ACMO, as a dual representative of both administration and the physician population, must embrace the opportunity to lead the institution's initiatives in the monitoring, continuous improvement, and overall excellence in patient care, focused on patients' and clinicians' needs. This effort is at the heart of BWH's work and the ACMO-AS must be a visible and vocal champion of efforts to consistently improve ambulatory care.

The ACMO-AS will work collaboratively with the medical staff in Ambulatory Services in addressing their issues, concerns, and expectations, and assure their participation and involvement in all significant issues, committees, and strategies. To accomplish this, s/he must develop communication methods to orient the medical staff to the evolving medical marketplace.

A key strategy for BWH's continued and future success is advancing collaboration and integration across the entire enterprise and between areas of the organization where such collaboration may be new. In keeping with that, the ACMO-AS will work with Chiefs of Service, senior administrative leadership, and the Brigham & Women's Physician Organization (BWPO), to cultivate a more active and participatory role for all staff in the development and implementation of the Ambulatory strategic clinical initiatives. To accomplish this, the ACMOs must lead the development of a unified medical staff and engage the BWPO, wherever possible, to develop shared goals and objectives between the medical staff and the hospital. The ACMO-AS will represent the Ambulatory team, as needed, including the Sr. Vice President on Committees and Meetings local to the Brigham, as well as across the MGB network.

The ACMO-AS will partner with Quality & Safety resources within Ambulatory Services and across BH to ensure overall compliance with CMS, MA Department of Public Health, The Joint Commission, etc. rules and regulations for Ambulatory. Additionally, the ACMO-AS will drive Network Development, specifically, the clinical integration of acquired practices/sites, including Harbor Medical Associates. Responsibilities may include the following:
  • Tracking and analyzing key data, including admissions, transfers, and referrals from entity (e.g., Harbor) to BWH and/or non-BWH entities
  • Assessing referrals and leakage
  • Evaluating existing or potential clinical programs and participating in the design, as needed
  • Support clinical integration of Brigham Population Health and/or Care Innovation programs at the practice
ACMOs must have the ability to establish professional and personal credibility with the BWH medical staff, management, and employees. In doing so, the ACMO will establish a tone of leadership which is professional, progressive, and outcome and quality orientated.

The ACMO will promote the maintenance of the highest ethical and behavioral standards on the part of all physician staff and employees.

Qualifications
MINIMAL TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Significant combination of clinical, academic, and administrative experience in a large academic medical setting.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership in hospital setting or large health care organization.
  • Faculty standing at Assistant Professor level or higher preferred
  • Primarily ambulatory based physician clinically
  • Exemplary interpersonal communication skills required to interact effectively with senior management and physicians on sensitive political and confidential issues.
