Position Summary:

To provide support to the Production Manager and Technical Director regarding performing arts venues, equipment, operations, maintenance, and activities.

Description of Key Responsibilities:

1. Support Technical Director in operation and organization of all technical production equipment and maintain adequate stock of expendable materials and advise on the acquisition of equipment.

2. Expertise in lighting, electrics, and rigging

3. Operation and troubleshooting of basic audio systems

4. Assist the Technical Director in coordinating and assigning student staff work calls as needed

5. Perform cleaning, maintenance, repair & inventory of all production related equipment, and within loading, storage, onstage and backstage areas

6. Coordinate with Technical Director the instruction of student production staff members in the care, safe execution and operation of electronic equipment, rigging, lighting equipment, sound engineering and equipment, leadership skills, basic and advanced production techniques.

7. Function as on-hand technical director for events in performing arts venues as needed.

8. Conduct regular inventory of lighting and audio equipment to ensure highest quality. Perform fine arts venue walk-throughs to maintain ongoing care for each respective facility. Identify and immediately report any damage.

9. Attend monthly student production staff meetings and supervise student staff as needed for campus sponsored events.

10. Enforce safety policies for the campus as set by the Risk Manager in the performing arts venues, as well as enforce other theater specific safety policies set in collaboration with the Production Manager and stated in the student staff employee guide.

11. Maintain quality of work through monitoring student and professional work force.

12. Maintain the organization of performing arts venue storage facilities.

13. Function as on-hand consultant for North Central College events as needed in area of technical expertise.

14. Determine and complete other routine performing arts duties as needed or as assigned by the Production Manager or Technical Director.

15. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors to the College. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Customer service is critical to the success of any organization that deals with customers. Strong customer service skills can build retention and visibility as NCC strives to distinguish itself from its competitors. An individual in this position must possess the proficiency, wherewithal and knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality customer and personal services to both internal and external customers of the College.

1. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, which will reflect positively on the College.

2. Ability to continuously demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills in dealing with students, faculty, administration and staff. Ability to work effectively as a member of small staff where cooperation and teamwork are the rule.

3. Must demonstrate expertise in lighting, electrics, rigging, staging, and sound equipment and venue operations.

4. Ability to be involved with several activities concurrently, to continually monitor their status, and to prioritize activities so that deadlines are met and overall effectiveness is maximized. These characteristics require an individual with strong organizational skills, detail oriented, and flexible.

5. Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of the College organization and operation, in particular, as it relates to the Performing Arts venues.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The assistant technical director directly supports all events that take place within campus performing arts venues, with the exception of Academic Theatre department productions. This person also performs regular cleaning and maintenance tasks within the venues and on equipment.

The person in this position is an integral member of a relatively small staff, and as such must be flexible and work cooperatively with others, regularly requiring evening, weekend, and some holiday hours.

This position interacts on a regular basis with College personnel, which includes students, faculty, administration, staff, and the general public. Interpersonal skills of the highest order, therefore, are essential.

Education/Training:

A Bachelor's Degree with four years of college training in the technical aspects of performing arts, or a minimum of five years in a professional work environment.

Experience:

Proven skills in set-up, operation and maintenance of stage lighting and sound equipment. Knowledge of computerized work environment, including basic programming ability of existing software. Ability to make routine machine and equipment repairs. Proven supervisory or managerial capability.

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record is required.
