The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Foundations: 3D. We are seeking an exceptional 3D artist/designer/teacher with extensive knowledge of contemporary arts pedagogies and experience teaching 3D Foundations classes at the college level.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the Studio Foundations Program and lead the 3D FOU program as 3D Coordinator. Courses to be taught will include 3D design and may also include one of the following, depending on experience: 2D design, drawing, first-year seminar, and digital essentials. We are seeking a candidate whose primary creative activity falls either in traditional or contemporary areas of 3D studio/design. This individual will teach undergraduate courses, contribute to curriculum development and other aspects of department activity, serve as an advisor for undergraduate students, and provide appropriate professional service.

As 3D Coordinator, the successful candidate will show evidence of coordinating the day-to-day operations of a 3D design facility. The 3D Coordinator is responsible for the acquisition of materials and supplies for the program and mentors graduate students teaching in 3D FOU, as well as possible adjunct faculty. A typical teaching load for non-tenure-track studio faculty is six studio courses per academic year.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA or an equivalent terminal degree in Art or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of two years of college-level teaching experience as an instructor of record beyond graduate school, including experience teaching 3D Foundations Program curriculum.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness is required. Examples may include examples of student work, course syllabi, course observations, and course evaluations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to teach in more than one Foundations area in addition to 3D FOU design (Foundational areas include: drawing, 2D design, first-year seminar, and digital essentials) and other 3D disciplines such as Sculpture and/or related 3D media areas.
  • Evidence of a broad approach to 3D Foundations curriculum with a demonstrated interest in Foundations Program pedagogy.
  • Experience teaching 3D digital fabrication.
  • Experience working with first-generation college students.

To apply, please submit the following: a cover letter outlining the candidate qualifications and interest in the position, a curriculum vitae, complete contact information for three professional references, a link to a web-based portfolio of candidate's work, a link to a web-based portfolio of student work in foundations classes, a teaching statement that details teaching philosophy, including demonstrated excellence in teaching a diverse student body, a statement on equity and inclusion in the classroom, a list of courses taught, and any other supplemental material as a single PDF that can support teaching effectiveness.
