Georgia College is located in Milledgeville, a charming town, that is 75 miles south and east of Atlanta. Our campus is located at 231 W Hancock St, Milledgeville, GA, 31061.
The Philosophy, Religion and Liberal Studies (PALS) department is positioned within the College of Arts and Sciences, which is the largest of the four colleges (the others being the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Health Sciences). The PALS department offers a BA in Liberal Studies and BA in Philosophy. Students can study Religion within the Liberal Studies major, under the Culture, Religion and Society concentration or pursue a BA in Philosophy with a Religion concentration. The 9-member department has expertise in Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Christian Thought, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Environmental Ethics, Food Ethics and Animal Ethics. The department was recently the recipient of a generous gift to establish the S&R Palvia Veetraag Vigyan Endowed Professorship in Jain Studies. This gift will be complemented by an additional gift to enable the PALS department to offer programs that promote the study of Jain perspectives through programmatic initiatives for faculty and students.
The successful candidate will teach several sections of a Critical Thinking Seminar, Global Perspectives Seminar, and/or Introduction to World Religions in GC's core curriculum. They will also teach one upper-level course in their area of expertise each semester. At least one upper-level course each year will incorporate significant content related to Jainism.
The successful candidate will have primary expertise in South Asian Religions, with a clearly articulated agenda for Jainism-related research.
The Assistant Professor of Religion in this position will serve as the S&R Palvia Veetraag Vigyan Endowed Professor of Jain Studies. The successful candidate will be a scholar of South Asian Religions with a clearly-articulated agenda for teaching and research in Jainism with some familiarity with the languages of the primary sources of Jain scriptures such as Prakrit and/or Sanskrit. The successful candidate will teach several sections of a Critical Thinking Seminar, Global Perspectives Seminar, and/or Introduction to Religious Studies in GC's core curriculum. They will likely teach one upper-level course each semester.
Additionally, we are seeking candidates with the following specific knowledge and skills in the classroom: ability to incorporate Jain perspectives in courses; ability to teach South Asian Religions and/or philosophies; ability to teach World Religions courses; ability to teach discussion intensive classes; ability to teach writing intensive classes; strong communication skills; successful higher education teaching experience; ability to contribute to the core curriculum.

The successful candidate will have primary expertise in South Asian Religions, with a clearly articulated agenda for Jainism-related research. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Primary expertise in South Asian Religions with a clearly articulated agenda for Jainism related research.
Ability to teach South Asian Religious perspectives in historical and contemporary contexts such topics as non-violence, animal rights, human rights, climate change, etc.
Scholar of South Asian Religions with a clearly-articulated agenda for teaching and research in Jainism with some familiarity with the languages of the primary sources of Jain scriptures such as Prakrit and/or Sanskrit.
