About SMU

SMU's more than 12,000 diverse, high-achieving students come from all 50 states and 90 countries to take advantage of the University's small classes, hands-on research opportunities, leadership development, community service, international study and innovative programs. The University offers a strong foundation in the humanities and sciences and undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs through eight schools.

Now in its second century of achievement, SMU is increasingly recognized for the ways it supports students, faculty and alumni as they become ethical leaders in their professions and communities. On the most beautiful college campus in the country, SMU Mustangs are energized by unbridled opportunities - from teaching, learning and research to creativity, performance and athletic endeavor.

Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute:

The Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute (DCII) provides a platform for collaboration and the exchange of ideas across academic disciplines, helping to forge connections between the physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities; between Dedman College and SMU's professional schools; and between academia and the broader community.

Serving as a dynamic center for intellectual life within Dedman College and at SMU, the DCII brings together faculty, students, and members of the DFW community by sponsoring interdisciplinary research groups and symposia, graduate and undergraduate student research fellowships, and community lecture series. Through these programs the DCII promotes a culture of interdisciplinary problem-solving and knowledge creation to meet the world's increasingly complex needs and challenges.

About the Position:

The Assistant Director assists the Director of the Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute (DCII) in the development, planning, and administration of all DCII programs and events, including faculty-led research clusters and symposia, community lecture series, graduate fellowships, undergraduate research programs, and other future initiatives; and to oversee the day-to-day operational management of the Institute.

Essential Functions:

  • Financial Management: Work with the DCII Director and Dedman College Financial Officer to complete the annual budget process and to conduct monthly budget review and reconciliation for all DCII Orgs and associated programs, approve Concur expenses and track expenditures for all programs and events, complete payment requests for program expenditures, and serve as primary contact for payroll duties.
  • Marketing and Digital Management: Manage all DCII marketing channels and work with the DCII Director to issue communications. This includes providing writing, design support, and oversight for weekly event emails, publicity materials for major events, press releases, DCII website content, a monthly e-newsletter, social media posts, and any paid media and paid social advertising; managing relationships with SMU marketing and public affairs offices and with external vendors; building and managing email recipient lists for community programs and events; placing events on the SMU and Dedman calendars.
  • Program and Event Management: Work with the DCII Director to plan events. Organize all program and event logistics, including serving as primary contact for recipients of DCII program funding; coordinating with and arranging travel, accommodation, and honoraria for speakers and student fellows; reserving event spaces and AV equipment; working with vendors; and attending and running major events.
  • Program and Event Development: Work with the DCII Director to creatively develop new University and community-wide programming and events. This includes consideration of how new programs and special projects can advance the DCII's mission and goals, identification of potential funding resources, budget development and expense forecasting, and event planning and implementation.
  • Board Management: Work with the DCII Director and the Dean of Dedman College to assemble advisory boards for the DCII, form and foster relationships with board members, and coordinate board functions.
  • Donor Management: Work with Dedman College Development to steward existing DCII donor relationships and develop new tactics and strategies to engage with potential donors. Assist the DCII Director in preparing data for and writing all annual endowment reports.
  • Community Relations: Build and sustain relationships with DFW community organizations to encourage community involvement, collaboration, and potential partnerships in DCII activities.
  • Operational Management: Manage all day-to-day operational aspects of the DCII. This includes providing direct oversight of graduate student assistants, serving as the public face of the DCII in its offices, responding to phone and email inquiries, and generally managing the office.
