SUMMARY

The Administrative ICD-10-CM Coding Expert (SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM Mapping) supports ICD-10-CM use based on the Health and Human Services National Library of Medicine (NLM) released SNOMED-CT to ICD-10-CM coding map, augmenting the NLM map to meet agency-specific IHS requirements. ICD-10-CM coding expertise is required. Expertise with the NLM SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM Map is strongly preferred. The content delivered supports the Electronic Health Record and related applications. Note: This work does not involve any patient identifiable information and does not include review of patient charts related to ICD-10 use, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Works and communicates with team members regularly, including with the clinical terminologist, operations manager, terminologist/database developer/software engineer, test-engineer and others in support of the work.

Demonstrates initiative in learning about and understanding the current system, data flow and the role of SNOMED-to ICD-10-CM map in this context.

Provides technical expertise in ICD-10-CM. Reviews updates to ICD-10-CM and updates client content where needed. Helps maintain a predictable update cycle for the client emphasizing minimal impact to end-users. Surveils future-oriented ICD-10-CM developments and communicates such to team.

Provides expertise in the implementation and customization of the NLM SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM map per customer needs. Formulates sequences of SNOMED CT-to-ICD-10-CM conditional mapping rules, which apply patient/visit-specific parameters (age, sex, trimester, etc.) to generate the appropriate suggested ICD-10-CM codes. Works with engineers to automate the generation of such rules to the extent possible.

Supports clinical terminologist regarding requests having to do with SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM maps.

Addresses requests for ICD-10-CM clarification or assistance, as needed by client, engineers and business owners.

Receives and applies feedback from clinical terminologist regarding the SNOMED-to-ICD maps.

Maintains customer satisfaction through a combination of meeting performance objectives, frequent communication, and developing the relationship so that collaboration and consultative solutions-oriented approaches are possible.

Proactively manages impacts of changes in project scope, identifies potential crises, and assists with devising contingency plans.

Develops and delivers progress reports such as project metrics and project status.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's or others' instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Five (5) years' of experience as an ICD coder
  • Three (3) years' of recent experience with inpatient coding
  • Experience with electronic health records and terminology, health care processes, and the data flow of the delivery of care

EDUCATION/EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
  • Bachelor of Science degree
  • Expertise with the NLM SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM Map
  • Federal contracting experience strongly preferred

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION
  • Possesses or has the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
  • Current coding certification - AHIMA CCS or equivalent
  • RHIA or RHIT credentials or equivalent preferred

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Solid organizational skills relevant to carrying out day-to-day responsibilities. Able to create weekly work goals and communicate such with team in transparent manner. Reports any problems with data, codes, etc. to team in an expedient manner.

Strong knowledge in reviewing and interacting with an electronic health record.

Knowledge of administrative code sets, particularly ICD-10-CM; the relationship between SNOMED CT and ICD-10-CM in National Library of Medicine (NLM) mapping files; and general awareness of RxNorm, CPT, HCPCS, DSM-5 and LOINC.

Ability to identify and articulate principles that underlie current and emerging ICD10-CM coding rules and best practices for various coding situations. Candidate will need to recommend and rationalize the handling of various complex situations in light of the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Ability and willingness to learn the functions of the EHR that interact with automated SNOMED-to-ICD10-CM coding rules. Willingness to test new editions of deployed rules.

Attention to detail and precision, with a high value on quality.

Exhibit professionalism at all times with client and team members.

Skilled proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, along with MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.

Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment under tight deadlines.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals pertinent to area of expertise, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals as needed. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and other customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
