Position Summary:
The Administrative Director (AD) provides high level administrative oversight and leadership for Surgery's Functional Unit's diverse and large inpatient, outpatient, perioperative, operations and finance at The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH). The AD partners with clinical and administrative leadership in JHH, Department of Surgery (DOS), perioperative services and nursing and the other surgical departments throughout Johns Hopkins Hospital which serves the adult surgical population at JHH.
The AD manages clinical operations and hospital finance for the department, including Advanced Practice Providers (APP) and perioperative personnel, Comprehensive Transplant Center, equipment, budgets and capital, hospital revenue cycle, training, space, etc. Also leads and supports quality and safety improvement and metric monitoring activities for hospital-based operations. Collectively, these operations generate millions in hospital patient care revenue on a $240 million expense budget. This AD position directly supervises approximately 8 FTEs including the hospital finance team, revenue cycle manager and other staff. They partner with DOS finance and analytics team to effectively support operations reporting for hospital-based operations and oversees the Department's annual multi-million-dollar capital submission and budget. The AD coordinates all necessary operational and administrative processes related to the advancement of surgery, the surgical programs, and the respective programmatic goals. These duties include financial analyses, budgeting, recruitment, network outreach planning, space and equipment needs, strategic and day-to-day operational integration, revenue enhancement activities, and information systems technology supporting surgery and surgical programs.
The AD provides administrative leadership support of DOS inpatient operations in partnership with Surgery's Director of Nursing and unit based nurse managers and APP Director, which includes more than 235 inpatient beds discharging 9,000+ patients per year across 10 inpatient units. They collaborate with central hospital services and oversight departments, as well as hospital executive leaders, to facilitate efficient patient flow and to maximize inpatient capacity and partner with DOS quality/safety/service leaders (physician, nursing and administrative) on performance improvement initiatives. The AD aligns operations to meet the needs of patient care while also supporting the educational and research missions of the department and institution.
The AD develops departmental goals, policies and procedures, mentors managers, oversees and stewards projects to scheduled completion, reviews expenditures with managers and implements operational solutions to budgetary issues. The AD oversees departmental compliance with regulatory agency requirements. They partners with hospital leadership on capital equipment selection and purchasing, equipment and space. Represents the department on institutional committees. The AD participates with senior leadership in strategic planning and business strategy for the JHH and DOS and helps to manage regulatory compliance with Medicare/Medicaid, MIEMSS, and other pertinent State and Federal regulations.
Reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the JHH Surgery Functional Unit. Works as part of a leadership triad to include the Vice Chair of Operations at JHH, Director of Nursing, Director of Finance as well as partners with various medical and clinical leaders across the DOS (including the Vice Chair for Quality, Safety & Service, Director of APP, Surgery finance, nurse managers of inpatient/procedure units). Serves as part of the DOS's incident command center team.
