Position Summary

 The Adjunct - Humanities positionprovides quality instruction and maintains a positive learning environment inthe classroom, with major emphasis placed on teaching, supporting, andevaluating students.  The Adjunct roleprovides instruction and monitors teaching/learning effectiveness in coursesassigned by the Department Chair, or other leadership members.  The incumbent must exhibit strongorganizational skills and the ability to multitask while engaging large groupsof people with complicated material.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instruction and StudentLearning

Teaches assigned courses asscheduled.  Designs curriculum embracingdiversity, in all forms, to foster talent in students while modeling inclusiveteaching strategies, with an understanding of the socio-cultural issues oftraditionally underrepresented groups.  Considers individual differences of students in order to design andsupport a range of appropriate learning activities.  Participates in the identification ofstudents with academic or other needs and responds by utilizing an appropriateresource.  Uses technology in a mannerappropriate to the nature and objectives of courses and programs and communicatesclearly to students the expectations concerning the use of suchtechnology.  Keeps accurate andappropriate records in accordance with departmental policies.

Maintains attendance records,determines, and submits grades timely, and in accordance with establishedpolicies and procedures of the College, and communicates progress feedback aswell as other relevant information to students throughout the semester.  Distributes and maintain accurate syllabithat incorporates departmental, college, cross-college, and instructorrequirements.    Conducts classespunctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule.  Employs appropriate assessment techniques tomeasure students' performance in achieving course goals and objectives.  Engages in periodic meetings with thedepartment, Lead Instructor, and Chairperson relative to teaching duties andprofessional development.

Student Engagement andAdvisement

Creates a positive classroomatmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort,academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and support forlearners.  Uses technology to assist incommunication with students.  Encouragesa sense of community among students for learning both inside and outside theclassroom.

Refers students to appropriatestudent and academic support services available at the College or in thecommunity.

Helps to ensure the College meetsits responsibilities in identifying areas of opportunity and systemic concernswhile reporting complaints alleging discrimination.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: online instruction techniques and methods; Microsoft Office; requisite or willing to gain requisite computer skills needed for Blackboard and/or other student support systems; internet research; online communication and record-keeping.Skill in: providing quality instruction; learning technologies and the use multi-media technology to enhance student learning; instructional planning and presentation; incorporating critical thinking, effective communication and other general education outcomes in course content; effective time management; proficiency with online communication record-keeping.Ability to: effectively communicate and use interpersonal skills; create engaging learning environments that respect a wide variety of viewpoints; be sensitive to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities; work independently without ongoing direct supervision; meet deadlines; perform student learning outcomes; maintain confidential and sensitive information, including FERPA.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree inAfrican-American history or African-American/African studies.  Previous teaching or teaching assistantexperience. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrableability to gain access to work site(s).

Additional Information:  May be needed to teach at off campus sites and distance learning courses.
