GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Accommodations Specialist is responsible for working with students with disabilities to coordinate their accommodations. The primary role of the coordinator is to provide support in the review process of accommodations requests, including supporting the initial review of documentation, conducting collaborative and intake meetings with students, and coordinating resources for students. The Accommodations specialist is responsible for a high level of confidential information. The Specialist interacts with parents, students, faculty, and staff under conditions which are often stressful. The work of the Accommodations Specialist is essential to ensuring that the University is meeting its obligations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Ace of 1973 and under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and the Amendment Act. In the absence of the Assistant Director, the Accommodations Specialist serves as the section 504 specialist for the university.

Additionally, this position will work collaboratively with Camner Center staff, faculty, and other campus departments to support students' needs and address concerns about accommodations and accessibility on campus. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Disability Services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the assistant director in the review of student requests for services.
  • Participate in the initial review of psycho-educational and medical documentation.
  • Coordinate the collaborative meeting (CM) schedule in Accommodate software system.
    • Conduct the CM with students.
    • Communicate updates with students and parents before, during, and after, decisions have been made.
  • Coordinate the intake schedule in Accommodate software system.
    • Conduct intake meetings with students to provide information about how their accommodations work at the University.
  • Support students in the coordination of accommodations.
  • Coordinate the note taking process. This includes obtaining notetakers, monitoring the submission of notes, troubleshooting issues with students, and issuing certificates for all notetakers.
  • Coordinate all special accommodations for students including CART Services, ASL interpreters, Braille, and Audiobooks.
  • Provide student centered disability advising for ODS registered students.
  • Communicate with parents and/or student regarding the implementation of accommodations, missing documentation, or general questions about ODS processes.
  • Serve as the primary troubleshooter in working out barriers to students using or accessing their accommodations. This includes campus accessibility issues and faculty issues.
  • Meets with students who come to ODS to discuss academic concerns or concerns about accommodations.
  • Maintain data for annual reporting.
  • Track number of student files in process in Accommodate.
  • Report note-taking statistics.
  • Monitor all assistive technology for the office and provide training and set-up for students, with support from the Assistive Technology Specialist.
  • Maintains a resource file with information related to accommodations and classroom accessibility.
  • Conducts pre-semester classroom check for accessibility and furniture needs.
  • Makes referrals to other University departments for student assistance, such as Camner Center tutoring, ILI program, learning specialist, Writing Center, Counseling Center, Ombudspersons, etc.
  • Respond to parent inquiries for additional documentation
  • Coordinate and implement new initiatives related to ODS students, programs, services, software, or assistive technologies.

Other Duties
  • Provide back up support to the testing specialist. This includes obtaining exams, coordinating arrangements with faculty, troubleshooting, scheduling, returning exams, and proctoring exams, as needed during busy times.
  • Collaborate and maintain successful working partnerships with faculty, academic advisors, and specialty support programs that provide students' academic support.
  • Represent the Camner Center at campus presentations, marketing and tabling events, and orientation presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum bachelor's degree in education or related field required.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Two years of experience in teaching or in the field of education.
  • Experience with working with individuals with disabilities in an academic environment.
  • Experience in program and project coordination.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (KSA):
  • Knowledge of new student program approaches, principles, and student development theories.
  • Specific knowledge of special education practices, disability groups, accommodations, and the ADA regulations governing individuals with disabilities.
  • Very detail oriented with ability to work independently at times.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Acrobat Reader, and other related software, such as, Accommodate, EAB Navigate.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Engagement of and follow-up with constituencies.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Responsible and timely decision making.
