Summary of Duties:

The Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture is searching for an Academic Coordinator/Advisor to work in the schools of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME). The primary responsibility of the position is to carry an academic advising load reflecting a diverse undergraduate student population and to provide support and education to enhance each student's learning experience at WSU.

The majority of the duties include, but are not limited to, assisting students with course scheduling and registration; developing individual academic plans and educating students in the areas of academic planning; interpretation of degree, department, school, college and university requirements; career exploration and other related matters; counseling non-VCEA students about possible admission to academic programs; and providing academic planning advice for prospective transfer students.


The position has additional duties outside of student advisement. The additional duties may include participating in program development for academic advising; logistical coordination of events, meetings, summer programs and short courses; maintaining program and course data; coordinating with faculty on curriculum updates; developing educational and recruitment materials; website updates; conducting web-based surveys and tabulating data; coordination of exit interviews for students; and collecting and organizing materials for meeting accreditation requirements, supervision of clerical assistant, purchasing for student projects, proctoring, recruiting at local community colleges.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of full-time academic advising experience at a college or university or related education/experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated experience with computer software and programs, specifically the Microsoft Office suite, and ability to learn new software and programs quickly.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively in a diverse team environment.

  • Must possess strong organizational and time management skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field.

  • Knowledge of curriculum management practices, processes and policies.

  • Knowledge of university computing systems such as the myWSU Advising Module, Student Success Collaborative, and Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE).

  • Demonstrated ability to extrapolate and tabulate data from online databases.

  • Experience with developing, distributing and analyzing web-based surveys in Qualtrics.

  • Familiarity with Washington State University academic rules and regulations, including WSU Catalog and Financial Aid.

  • Experience with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
