JOB SUMMARY

The School of Business Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA) is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor 2.  The incumbent will report to the OUA Director of Support Services for the regional campuses and will provide academic advising and counseling to students to support their development through experiential learning while planning for academic excellence. This position will be based at the Stamford campus. The position is based at the Stamford campus but may require occasional in-state or out-of-state travel and evenings or weekends in support of program activities. Evening and weekend hours will also be required on occasion in support of program activities. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to:

  • Advising students in personalized curriculum decisions including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters.
  • Attending to the special needs of various unique student populations through the creation and implementation of tailored programs and services, advising, and collaboration with other student-centered offices.
  • Creating plans-of-study to support students in their educational needs, career goals, and professional development.
  • Discussing students' status regarding academic warning, probation, or dismissal and provides recommendations for students who submit appeals.
  • Referring students to other student success services such as Career Services and Counseling and Mental Health Services, as appropriate.
  • Evaluating how services are delivered in their area of focus and recommends plans for improvement. 
  • Auditing student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements, probationary requirements, and eligibility to graduate.
  • Working with probationary students to develop strategies to improve academic standing.  Actively participates in determining the dismissal of students in academic jeopardy. 
  • Collaborating with Department Heads, Program Directors, Career Consultants, Global Affairs, and others to plan and implement scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs, and other student academic success activities, as assigned.
  • Coordinating and implementing programs to promote recruitment and retention of students, particularly for unique populations such as transfer students, international students, first-year students, and academic warning/probation students.
  • Serving as a liaison between the School of Business and the student support staff at the Stamford campus.
  • Overseeing departmental programs or initiatives related to advising.
  • Serving as an instructor for the First Year Experience (FYE) or a mentorship course, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, education or a related field and four years of related experience OR master's degree in counseling, education or a related field and two years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in counseling students.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and Access.
  • Demonstrated experience working with freshmen and transfer students.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a high traffic office.
  • Dependable transportation and willingness and ability to travel in-state and out-of-state and work occasional evenings and weekends.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in counseling, education or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adult learners.
  • Prior experience in teaching college students.
  • Demonstrated experience advising student organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students seeking admission to selective admission programs.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with constituents in virtual environments.  
  • Previous supervisory experience of student staff.
