The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Ambulatory Surgery Center is seeking a 60% Nursing Assistant, who assist the members of the nursing team in provision of multiple types of patient care in in-patient and out-patient care areas. Their work requires familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures used in delivering patient care. 60% rotating schedule, 8 hour shifts, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hours may be adjusted based on departmental needs.

Duties to include:

  • Assists with patient admission, transfers and discharges
  • Provides for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turns, positions and ambulates patients.
  • Transports patients, equipment, specimens and supplies.
  • Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishments, and records patients' intake.
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
  • Carries out medical asepsis and cares for isolated patients.
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, etc.
  • Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
  • Provides for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies and for nearness and cleanliness of unit.
  • May assemble equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
  • Performs special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge.
  • Cleans patient units, operating rooms and examining rooms dependent on the area of assignment.
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Percent of Time: 60%

Schedule: 8 hour shifts - rotating schedule between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

Location: Ambulatory Surgery Center - 4th floor Pomerantz Family Pavilion (PFP)

Rotations: Rotating schedule between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Hours may be adjusted based on departmental needs

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
