Job Description

As an Entry level paint process engineer in the Paint TRACK program, you will be exposed and rotate around in different positions and assignments in a vehicle assembly paint shop. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of manufacturing and the areas of the paint shop. In each role, you will have the opportunity to work autonomously with guidance from supervision. You will develop skills in equipment, tooling, and processes including sequence and flow of operations for the effective utilization of personnel, material, machines, and facilities necessary for production in a fast-paced environment.

As a Paint Process TRACK engineer, you will learn problem solving on the fly, work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and be able to innovate. Assignments will be in a Vehicle Assembly Paint Shop in the United States. Examples of Paint Process Engineering assignments and responsibilities include:

  • Operating and maintaining systems from the exit of Body Shop to shipment to General Assembly as well as any paint shop processes related to enabling shipment of the finished vehicle.
  • Programming of manufacturing technology
  • Analyze product, process, and technology to craft best methods to paint & assemble vehicles, and protect people and the manufacturing process
  • Troubleshoot with operation and maintenance personnel on paint shop processes and specialized equipment
  • Supervise United Automotive Workers (UAW) hourly employees
  • Recommend and validate improvement for existing processeswith respect to sustainability, quality, and cost initiatives
  • Develop tools to improve program/project management
  • Assists in the design and building of production tools and equipment
  • Coordinate and manage machinery upgrade and/or installation projects
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to reduce energy and waste globally.
  • Support implementation & execution of cybersecurity tools for manufacturing

This position requires employees to be on-site on a full-time basis. Job locations are in various plant locations throughout the U.S. or at the Manufacturing Engineering Headquarters in Warren, MI. The U.S. Plant locations may include:

  • Detroit / Hamtramck, MI
  • Flint, MI
  • Lansing, MI
  • Orion, MI
  • Fort Wayne (Roanoke), IN
  • Arlington, TX
  • Bowling Green, KY
  • Spring Hill, TN
  • Wentzville, MO
  • Fairfax, KS

Some travel may be required.

Additional Job Description

Qualifications:
  • Currently have or pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Engineering or Technology in one of the following areas: Automation, Automotive, Chemical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Robotics from an accredited college or university or relevant career experience
  • Must be graduating between December 2021 and September 2023
  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week
  • Willing and able to work on weekends/holidays or off-shift hours (some assignments may require)

  • Prior experience in field of study
  • Conceptual understanding and/or experience with any of the following:
    • Controls - software, hardware programming, development, or execution
      • Examples: Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Robots

    • Simulation/Game design or development
    • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine vision equipment or systems
    • Automation or automated equipment such as conveyance
    • Information Technology
    • Construction or installation planning, process, or execution
    • Supervision of hourly employees
  • Consistently demonstrates innovative thinking that is customer-centric
  • Able to work independently and with a team
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization and external partners
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience
  • Emerging partnership and collaboration skills and ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed
  • Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability, and trust
  • Excellent project management skills and the proven ability to manage multiple projects at any given
  • Knowledge of statistical methods as applied to experimental design and process development
