Direct Support Professional - Shift Leader is responsible for supporting and coordinating activities of individuals living in homes operated by VOAC; teaching independent living skills to the individuals; facilitating community integration; and contributing to and maintaining the client's safety and well being in accordance with the contract scope of work and Volunteers of America Chesapeake's policies and procedures. The Shift Leader serves as a lead staff person in the home assisting in the daily management of the home.

Requirements
Minimum of a high school diploma, or GED and three (3) years of experience in a residential program for individuals with mental retardation or intellectual disabilities. Experience in a residential setting with other types of special needs populations may be considered (i.e. cerebral palsy, Autism, Alzheimer's, Traumatic Brain Injury).

Medication Administration Certification in the State of Virginia is preferred.

NOTE: A bonafide occupational exception may be established for this position based upon sex/gender when it is necessary to ensure that at least one female and one male are on duty during each shift.

A successful candidate must pass the MR residential staff orientation examination designated by DBHDS, maintain certifications required by Virginia regulations, licensing and the Medicaid Waiver program.

OTHER :

  • This position requires driving your personal vehicle for company business. Must be privileged to drive according to the criteria set forth by Agency MVR guidelines.
    • Valid driver's license in jurisdiction of residence
    • Vehicle liability coverage if driving personal vehicle (on occasion, may be required to transport clients in personal vehicle)
    • May be required to drive a van
  • Acceptable Criminal background check, OIG Exclusion check
  • Negative Drug Screening
  • CPR/First Aid Certification must be acquired and maintained once employed


PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES :
  • Assists with the daily management of the home including taking the lead role as directed.
  • Provides support necessary to ensure resident needs and assistance as identified by the Inter-Disciplinary Team are provided.
  • Communicates and coordinates with families, members of the Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT), the consumer's day program and other providers of services and supports as necessary and appropriate.
  • Instructs, supports and participates in performing household tasks with individuals such as cleaning, preparing meals, planning household budgets, food shopping, etc. Ensures household supplies and foods are ordered, purchased and maintained appropriately.
  • Assists individuals to develop daily living skills by identifying and assisting with meeting social, environmental and health care needs.
  • Monitors individuals to ensure they take medication as prescribed and teaches them how to take medication independently. May assist with overseeing medication administration procedures and documentation.
  • Performs crisis intervention, provides emergency counseling and assistance.
  • Plans, coordinates and participates with individuals in social activities.
  • Participates in assessment activities and on the IDT as appropriate.
  • Transports individuals and/or provides mobility training to assist individuals to go to appointments, community rehabilitation programs, grocery shopping, etc.
  • Communicates and documents activities and behaviors of individuals in logbook and client files as appropriate.
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service trainings, house and program meetings as directed. Assists in the provision of pre-service training as directed.
  • Ensures program compliance with Volunteers of America Chesapeake's program and house rules.
  • Assists in monitoring and managing household expenses and resident funds.
  • Inspects the home, and reports and coordinates repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Ensures fire and other safety procedures are practiced and carried out as directed. Also checks for proper sanitation and security conditions within the residence.
  • Monitors activities of visitors in the home.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Volunteers of America Chesapeake's policies and procedures.
  • Daily documentation of services manually and in the electronic system

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to transport oneself, consumers, and program supplies as necessary.
  • The physical ability to travel to assigned locations, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push, lift, grasp, climb, talk, see, hear and perform basic and light home maintenance activities, and operate office equipment.
  • Move and lift light objects up to 30 pounds such as mail, supplies, files, and equipment.
  • Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.
  • The ability to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.


EFFECT ON END RESULTS :
  • To ensure needs of the client as identified by the IDT are met and client sanitation is achieved.
  • To ensure that the program is operated in compliance with the contract scope of work. Volunteers of America Chesapeake's policies and procedures and licensing and Medicaid Waiver regulations.
  • Individuals will be supported in being participatory members of their community according to their interests.
