DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, this person will be responsible for carrying out experiments aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The incumbent will perform tissue culture analysis, real time PCR, DNA methylation profiling, western blots, immunoprecipitation and cell assays. An important role in this position is maintaining the mouse colony, breeding, genotyping, performing minor surgeries, behavioral testing, drug administration and tissue collection. Basic managerial tasks will also be required, including general administration of the lab (arrange for equipment servicing; managing purchasing and documentation, maintaining updated records and compliance with EH&S and animal safety regulations.

Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the SRA 1 or SRA 2 level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.

  • Expertise in molecular biology including RNA/DNA isolation, real-time PCR, viral production, plasmid cloning and preparation.

  • Demonstrated experience with tissue culture, preferably with neuronal cell lines.

  • Experience in basic biochemistry methods, including Western blot, primary neuronal cultures, ELISA assay, immunohistochemistry and basic microscopy.

  • Hands-on experience in rodent models of disease, including colony management (breeding; genotyping, weaning), basic surgical procedures, drug delivery (i.p. injections), tissue collection (brain).

  • Strong computer skills and experience with the operation of all basic software applications such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and knowledge to work with a variety of statistical and analysis programs like Prism, and learn specialized imaging and analysis software.

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbally and written) to interact professionally and effectively in a basic research environment, as well as accurately document research procedures. Ability to comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to multitask. Ability to perform accurate record keeping and organize and calculate data. Ability to prioritize workload and to shift efforts to meet changing and demanding project and research timelines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community and in a lab environment that interacts with a diverse group of people.

  • Knowledge of basic lab safety requirements, procedures, and EH&S regulations and methods for handling inventory, storing, clean-up, and waste disposal for biohazardous materials. Ability to maintain safe and orderly lab, maintain inventories, and order lab supplies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and related disorders.
  • Experience with cutting-edge molecular biology techniques like RNA-seq; ChIP-seq; library preparation are highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with behavioral testing on rodent models is a plus.
